Today is my birthday too. But I am 80.
Today is his birthday.
He kept his body pressed low to the ground,
as if the floor was the only thing in the world
that hadn’t pushed him away.
The courtyard was nearly empty.
A stained wall.
A broken door hanging unevenly.
A shallow puddle fading into the concrete.
In the corner sat a metal bowl.
From a distance, it looked clean.
Up close, it held nothing a hungry dog could trust.
He wasn’t lying beside it.
Not like a dog waiting to be fed…
but like one who had learned
the bowl was just a promise,
not a meal.
His body was folded carefully, almost unnaturally.
Front legs stretched forward.
Back legs tucked beneath him.
Ribs visible through his thin brindle coat,
like quiet lines telling a story no one had read.
A collar still circled his neck.
Worn. Heavy.
The only thing that said,
“He must belong to someone.”
But some collars
are just old stories
people never came back to finish.
When the rescuer stepped into the courtyard,
he lifted his head.
Slowly.
Not with hope… not yet.
With caution.
His ears stayed low.
His eyes were wide, tired, and soft in a way
that made him look older than he really was.
He didn’t bark.
He didn’t beg.
He just looked…
and asked the smallest, quietest question
a broken dog can ask:
“Will this hurt too?”
