Effective July 1, 2026, Horseshoe Lake near Hughes in Crittenden County will have a 10-inch minimum length limit on crappie. This regulation resulted from years of research examining growth, harvest, and mortality. For a minimum length limit to work, a fishery requires fast growth rates, high harvest rates, and low to moderate natural mortality. Here is an overview of those factors:

🟢Growth: If fish do not grow quickly, they "stunt out" below the minimum length limit, providing no benefit to the fishery. Recent sampling shows growth has improved, with fish reaching approximately 10.6 inches by age-2.
🟢Harvest Rate: If anglers are not harvesting fish, protecting them through length limits offers no value. A 2018–2019 exploitation study revealed an adjusted harvest rate of 36%, which is high enough to support this change.
🟢Natural Mortality: If too many fish die from natural causes like predation or disease before reaching harvestable size, there are not enough fish to protect.

Although length limits do not work for every water body, this regulation should protect some fish from harvest and allow for continued growth without reducing the overall harvest for anglers.

To see the most up-to-date regulations, be sure to check out the new 2026-2027 Fishing Guidebook, which will be in effect starting July 1!

🚴‍♂️🏃‍♀️🎆 Race planning is officially underway for the 2026 Horseshoe Lake 4th of July 5K, Bike Race & Fireworks Celebration!

We’re excited to bring this community tradition back and are working hard behind the scenes to make this year’s event a great one. Stay tuned for race details, registration information, and event updates in the coming weeks.

We are now seeking sponsors to help make this event possible! Sponsorship forms are available, and we’d love to have your business or organization involved. If you’re interested in becoming a sponsor, please call Camille Zanone at (901) 497-8271.
