Fostering has changed my life in ways I never could have understood when I first said yes.
I was 21 years old, about to finish my senior semester of college, when I said yes to a four-day-old baby boy.
Out of almost ten years of âyesâ I have given since, he will forever be my favorite one.
At the time, I thought I was saying yes because he needed me. Looking back, I know I needed him more.
That tiny baby changed the entire direction of my life. Somehow, in the middle of bottles, sleepless nights, college assignments, appointments, and learning how to care for another human being, I found a purpose I didnât even know I was looking for.
I remember knowing one thing with absolute certainty: no matter what happened, I wasnât going to be alone anymore. I had him, and he had me. And I knew I would do everything in my power to protect him from the world.
That first yes taught me what it meant to love a child with my whole heart before knowing what the future would look like.
Over the years, fostering has continued to stretch me, humble me, challenge me, and change me. I have opened my home during some of the hardest moments in childrenâs lives, thinking about what I could give themâa safe place to sleep, consistency, advocacy, stability, and love.
But foster care has given me just as much in return.
It has taught me that family can begin with a simple yes. It has taught me to love without guarantees. It has taught me that the smallest momentsâbeing there after a hard day, celebrating a birthday, showing up to an activity, remembering a favorite snack, sitting beside a child when theyâre scaredâcan become some of the biggest moments in their story.
There have been hard days. There have been goodbyes. There have been moments that broke my heart and moments that filled it more than I ever thought possible.
And I would still say yes.
Because somewhere, there is a child who needs someone willing to show up.
You do not have to have a perfect life, a perfect house, or every answer before becoming a foster parent. I certainly didnât at 21. But I took it one day at a time.
Sometimes you just have to be brave enough to say yes.
That four-day-old little boy changed my entire life with mine.
Your yes could change your life too!
