After a day of golfing with the boys, Tom decided to grab a drink with his lady at their local(ish) bar, The Red Carpet in Hood River. It took a few minutes before Big City 5's Diamond Jackpot began paying out big time! He cashed out at $19,713 and was so excited that he bought everyone in the bar a drink! šŸø And Tom, from Cook, Washington, came to the claim center well prepared to pick up his giant check... he brought photo shoot props šŸ˜ŽšŸ„³ Congrats, Tom!

ā€œIrish Car Bombā€

A quick bit of context, especially during Saint Patrick’s Day season.

Ordering that drink in Ireland would land about the same way as walking into a bar in New York City and asking for something called a ā€œFlaming Twin Towers.ā€ Not because people are overly sensitive, but because the name points directly to a very real and painful chapter of history. We’ve even seen people actually say, ā€œI order it out of respect for my Irish roots.ā€
This isn’t respectful at all.

It references ā€œThe Troubles,ā€ a decades-long conflict centered in the North of Ireland that lasted from the late 1960s until the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. During those years, car bombings were tragically very common and many civilians lost their lives.

It was invented in 1979 at Wilson’s Saloon in Norwich, Connecticut by an American bartender named Charles Burke Cronin Oat. The creator himself later expressed regret about the name after criticism from victims’ groups and the Irish community.

Most Americans who order the drink have no idea that’s what the name refers to. There’s rarely any ill intent behind it.

But it’s one of those moments where a little historical awareness goes a long way. If you enjoy the drink itself, the exact same mix can simply be ordered as an ā€œIrish Slammerā€ instead.

Same drink. No reference to real tragedies. And a bit more respect for the history behind the culture you’re celebrating.

See you Tuesday for an IRISH SLAMMER!

As many of you know, we recently lost our friend Aaron Richilano. As a long time staple in the community and our bar family, he is missed beyond words already. Snakes was a fiercely loyal friend, and to remember him we’d like to invite you all to raise a glass with us.

To honor Aaron and help support his family and daughter during this difficult time, we will be holding a Memorial Fundraiser at the Red Carpet tomorrow from Noon- close. 100% of sales will go directly to the family.

Please join us tomorrow to share stories and memories with each other and help out Aaron’s Family.

If you can’t make it but would still like to contribute, feel free to reach out.

If anybody in the gorge knows this person we feel you should know that he threatened physical harm to the family of our owner.

He lost money in our parking lot and one of our customers found it and returned it. When he came back for it he said it wasn’t all there and requested that the owner reimburse him personally or else ā€œhe and his friends would visit his wife and children at homeā€.

We don’t take this lightly and we hope that the Hood River Police Department won’t either.
