The next Leo Hone o Kahala has a date, and it is one to plan around.

On Thursday, October 15, Lawakua brings their harmonies to the open-air terrace at Plumeria Beach House. Three voices, one unmistakably Hawaiian sound, and an evening built for slowing all the way down as the light goes low over the water.

Presented by the Hawaiian Music Perpetuation Society and KISCA.

Thursday, October 15 | 6:30pm to 8:30pm (seating starts at 5:00pm)

Some lunches do not need to be an event to be the best part of the day.

A club stacked with turkey, bacon, and avocado on toasted bread, a bright little side salad, and an iced tea sweating in the September warmth.

The kind of easy midday plate that tastes right when the summer rush has finally eased off and there is no reason to hurry back.

Iced tea or something stronger with lunch?

The best afternoons here do not really have a plan.

Someone orders a little of everything, someone else nurses a cold drink a bit too long, and the conversation keeps going after the plates are cleared.

That is a September afternoon at Plumeria Beach House, the crowds gone quiet, the trade winds easy, the ocean sitting right there past the lawn.

Oktoberfest has arrived at Plumeria Beach House!

From September 19 through October 4, lunch gets a Bavarian-inspired addition with a menu made for the occasion.

Start with warm Bavarian pretzel sticks and cheddar beer dip, followed by a loaded sausage platter with bratwurst, knockwurst, kielbasa and kimchi Portuguese sausage, served with kraut and fries.

Save room for Black Forest cake, and pair it all with an Ayinger Oktoberfest Märzen from the bar.

There is a reason Hoʻokena has been the sound of a Hawaiian Sunday for forty years.

Sunday Kanikapila is back on the open-air terrace at Plumeria Beach House, and this week it belongs to Hoʻokena. Four decades in, four Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards deep, and still the kind of harmonies that make a room lean in and go quiet.

The music, the buffet, and the last of the Kahala sun on the water, all in one evening.

Presented with Hawaiian 105 KINE

Sunday, October 4 | 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Free parking.

During Hawaiian language month, the mele belongs on an oceanfront stage.

For more than five decades, Kuʻuipo Kumukahi has been one of the most respected voices in mele Hawaiʻi, a singer, cultural practitioner, and educator whose life has been given to preserving and perpetuating Hawaiian music.

A multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner and Co-Founder of the Hawaiian Music Perpetuation Society, she has spent a lifetime sharing Hawaiian values through mele, moʻolelo, and hula.

This September, she brings that legacy to the open-air terrace at Plumeria Beach House in Kahala for Leo Hone o Kahala, joined by friends.

An evening of live Hawaiian music the way it has always been meant to be heard: oceanfront, unhurried, and rooted in place. Presented with the Hawaiian Music Perpetuation Society.

Summer is not quite done with Kahala yet.

The afternoons are still warm enough to earn something cold, and the terrace at Plumeria Beach House still catches the best of the light this time of year.

A frozen strawberry blend under a pineapple wedge and an orchid, or a bright citrus pour over ice, either one is a good reason to slow down and watch the water for a while.

Frozen or over ice?

One tray, and suddenly lunch is the plan for the whole afternoon.

There is something about September that makes a slow lunch feel earned. The Kahala Signature Bento at Plumeria Beach House gives you a little of everything: misoyaki butterfish, ribeye steak, ahi sashimi, seasoned rice, and a handful of crisp, local greens.

Enough variety to keep everyone at the table reaching, and no reason to rush back to anything.

Which corner are you starting with?

September Sundays move a little slower.

Build your own omelet, pile the fruit bowl high, and let the trade winds do the rest on the terrace at Plumeria Beach House in Kahala.

The last long weekend of summer is the one worth lingering over.

September is starting to soften in Kahala. The crowds thin out, the light goes a little longer in the afternoon, and a table at Plumeria Beach House becomes the easiest place to let the day stretch. The kids have something for every appetite, the Pacific sits just past the lawn, and nobody is checking the time.

How are you spending the long weekend?
