October 17th is Okinawa Soba Day! Stop by today for some of our ono Okinawa Soba! Dine in or take out. Hope to celebrate Soba Day with all of you!

This designation has been in place since 1978, "when the Japanese Fair Trade Commission decided to finally recognize “Okinawa soba.”

The problem was that “soba” in mainland Japan, was an entirely different food. Soba in mainland Japan is made with buckwheat flour called “Sobako.” Okinawa soba does not include any buckwheat and is made of flour and could not be called “soba” under the Japanese technical definition.

Romyn’s first time trying Okinawan Soba!

She liked it! Enjoyed the flavor of the broth, was surprised at the generous portions and loved the pork. Romyn even tried the koregusu (awamori infused with chili pepper). Mahalo for stopping by for lunch!

Celebrate Goya Day with us on May 8th! We have goya champuru.

Heck, let’s celebrate Goya all week!

May 8th is Goya Day. Are you ready for it?! It's a day we should be eating bittermelon (goya). I've had pickled goya, goya ice cream, goya chocolate, raw goya, goya tea, goya champuru, and goya juice! How have you bittermeloned?

Here's all the places you can get your goya on on Oahu. Please comment if there are places I missed that feature bittermelon on their regular menus!

- Chez Kenzo has Goya Champuru on their Happy Hour menu
- Ethel's Grill has Goya Champuru
- Izakaya Naru has Goya Champuru
- Sakana Grill has Goya Champuru
- Sunrise Restaurant Hawaii has Goya Champuru
- Utage Restaurant & Lounge has Goya Champuru

On this day celebrating the oft maligned bittermelon, may it be a bitterly delicious one! Spread da word!

Congratulations to Tomoko and Chokatsu Katsu Tamayose the owners of Sunrise Restaurant Hawaii who celebrate 24 years of serving wonderful Okinawan food at their iconic restaurant TODAY!

Sunrise has always been a gathering place for the Hawaii Okinawan community. It will always have a special place in my heart because it was my introduction to Okinawan food and an important pathway that led to my involvement in the local Okinawan community.

Katsu would stand behind his sushi counter most of the night and interact with his customers. For the longest time, I was "George Tamashiro's daughter" and Katsu would always make sure to introduce me to EVERY Uchinanchu who was dining in the restaurant. I have met so many wonderful people at Sunrise, some of them becoming dear friends like いのうえ ちず and Arisa Oshiro and Mitchel Shimamura to name a few.

I remember Katsu telling me, "Hey! Chizu is an editor of a magazine in Okinawa. Help her out." When I met Arisa, he told me, "Hey! Arisa is studying at your college. Help her out." I am so glad I did because both have become part of my family.

Sunrise is not a restaurant that you quietly eat at your table, it is like a Cheers where people are talking to other people across the room, strangers are pouring you a glass of awamori and sometimes these strangers become like family. I introduced my co-worker Daim Zuke to the karate sensei sitting at the table next to ours and they figured out they were related. Only at Sunrise would that happen.

Ippei Nifwee Deebiru Katsu and Tomoko for 24 years of wonderful homestyle Okinawan cooking and ono sushi, for the live music and dancing, for being such an important gathering place for our community, and for helping me discover my roots and heritage. 💜 From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all that you do for your customers!

Funny story. I just texted Tomoko this morning to offer my congratulations and she told me, "I forgot!" LOL! So please order take out this week or dine in at Sunrise and congratulate them so they don't forget again! 😀 Heck, next year will be their 25th anniversary. Can’t forget that! - Shari T.

Nifee Deebiru and Mahalo to Mari Taketa & Frolic Hawaii for sharing our story!

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported Sunrise Restaurant over the years, and during this recent crisis. Tomoko and Chokatsu are deeply grateful.

If there are local places that you treasure, you need to keep checking in on how they are doing and when they need help, we need to send out that bat signal to make sure their doors can stay open.

Sunrise Restaurant holds very special place in my heart. It's the place that connected me to my heritage and introduced me to the Hawaii Okinawan community. Seriously, Katsu would always introduce me to other people dining there as "George Tamashiro's daughter" and that's how I met so many different people in the community and found my way to connecting with my culture. I will always support Sunrise however I can because to me, it is a treasure and a gathering place worth fighting for. - Shari

Mahalo nui loa & Ippei nifee deebiru! Fundraising to support Sunrise Restaurant has hit $30,000 in TWO days!

Goal #1: MET! We raised $13,000 so that Sunrise can pay off the back rent owed and rent for May. With that paid off, the landlord is willing to sign a 3-year lease with Sunrise.

Goal #2: Ongoing! We are continuing to raise funds to give them a safety net for upcoming rent payments and give them time to work out a plan for what needs to be adjusted and changed in the future to both survive and thrive. https://www.gofundme.com/f/save-sunrise-restaurant-help-keep-it-open

Goal #3: Get assistance from experts in the community to find ways the business can both survive and thrive, as well as handle unexpected emergencies and repairs and whatever else life throws at them.

In addition to the generous donations, people have been quietly offering legal services and professional consultations, all pro bono. This outpouring of support and love for Sunrise Restaurant Hawaii is so heartwarming and beautiful.

This experience exemplifies Chimagukuru (Okinawan heart, spirit and soul), Yuimaaru (communities supporting one another, especially in times of need), Ichariba C***e (once we meet we are as family), and Chibariyo (give it your best)!

Here is a video of Chokatsu Katsu Tamayose singing Tinsagu nu Hana and playing a kankara sanshin at the restaurant. I'm grateful that we can continue to eat Okinawan food and listen to Okinawan folk music at Sunrise!

After the Battle of Okinawa, people used tin cans and whatever else they could find to create this "kankara" sanshin. To the devastated people of Okinawa, when they heard the sounds of the tin can sanshin accompanied with song, they felt hope for the first time in months because music had returned to the islands. I chose this song as a thank you because I hope it brings you hope as well.

HELP SAVE SUNRISE RESTAURANT FROM CLOSING AT THE END OF THE MONTH!

One of Hawaii's Okinawan restaurants is on the verge of having to shut down and go out of business. We are asking for your kokua to save Sunrise Restaurant and help keep its doors open.

SITUATION: Sunrise Restaurant is three months behind on rent. Their landlord has been accommodating in the past by waiving late charges and not raising the rent last year. Given that they are long-time tenants, the landlord is giving them one last chance to settle their debt and keep the business open. Sunrise must pay the balance of rent plus May ($13,314) by April 30th.

If they make the payment, they will be able to continue with a three-year lease agreement. If Sunrise cannot make the April 30th payment, Sunrise will have to shut its doors.

We are setting a goal of $15,000, so Sunrise can make its payment on April 30th and keep its doors open. Any money raised above that will be used to help them cover subsequent rent to give them time to get back on their feet.

For 23 years, Sunrise has been an important gathering place for the Hawaii Okinawan community and those who want to experience Okinawan cuisine and music. For them to close their doors (so soon after Hide-Chan shuts down) would be heartbreaking and a significant loss for the community.

The pandemic was particularly rough for Sunrise. With Chokatsu operating the kitchen and sushi counter and Tomoko running the front of house, this mom-and-pop operation had to quickly learn how to use social media to communicate with their customers and adapt their menu to be more suited for take-out. Their specialty was in-person, family-style dining. On the first day, the city shut down dine-in and switched to take-out only; in 6 hours, Chokatsu said he only had one take-out order. It has been a struggle, but throughout the pandemic, with the support of many wonderful people, Sunrise was able to make enough money to cover their bills.

SO WHAT HAPPENED TO GET SUNRISE TO THIS SITUATION? When the second peak of COVID cases hit Hawaii, it impacted their business and made it extremely hard for them to keep up with their bills. Unfortunately, a number of unforeseen expenses, such as a necessary repair to the fire alarm system, all happened simultaneously, and they fell behind.

In March, with dine-in and take-out customers, business has picked up a lot. So what they need now is help getting through this period and a safety net until things are back to normal.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Donate what you can. ANY amount would be greatly appreciated.
