National Bison Month takes place each ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฒ, commemorating the American bisonโs historical significance, ecological role, and remarkable recovery from near extinction. The month was established following the ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐๐ง ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ง๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐ฆ๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐ฅ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐ญ๐๐ญ๐๐ฌ, recognizing its comeback and importance to American heritage. Historically, bison populations numbered between 30 to 60 million across North America, but by the late 1800s, overhunting and habitat loss reduced their numbers to fewer than 1,000 animals. Today, thanks to conservation efforts, roughly 500,000 bison inhabit public and private lands, ranches, and preserves.

National Bison Month aims to:
โข ๐๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ ๐๐ฐ๐๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ฌ about bison conservation and ecological contributions.
โข ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ญ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ on bison history, biology, and cultural importance.
โข ๐๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ ๐ซ๐๐๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ through donations, volunteering, and sustainable bison products
Bison are considered ๐๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฆ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ, as their grazing, wallowing, and manure enrich grasslands, promote plant growth, and create microhabitats for other wildlife. They also hold cultural significance for Indigenous communities and symbolize resilience and unity in American history.
