So, as I sit here in my chair enjoying the medical TV show, I know I am 19 minutes past my bedtime. (My alarm goes off at 3am!
I'm am one of the 76 million American baby boomers. The largest generation. Being born at the end of the baby boom, I was lucky enough to grow up without the internet, without color TV. Days that started around 8am, fed dressed and ready to go outside, meet up with my neighborhood friends and spend the day playing. Running, playing jump rope, tag, hide and go seek, activities that left us with maybe two kids that were slightly overweight at graduation. Moms were mostly home and dads worked. All moms watched out for all the children, maybe in their backyard, maybe playing hop scotch in the street in front of their house. Mom's called us home for lunch. Then back out again to return home at five when we gathered with our whole family for what we called supper. Then outside for a game of softball or kick ball. We headed home when the streetlights went on. A glorious time!
When I look in the mirror its hard to make out that young carefree girl of my past.
I try to imagine the memories of the children of today. Living their free time plastered to a smart phone, laptop or tablet. The have little to no social time with their friends, do they even have face to face friends?
Im not saying that all children of today are like this, but the majority of those I come in contact with are exactly like this and it makes me sad for them. They all live in a fantasy land on line. That's not to say we did not see anything bad, assinations of both the Kennedys. Of MLK. Rocky Marcianos plane crash, things like that. Not school shootings, no mass shootings at all. We did have the Civil Rights movement, but I grew up in New England so the things happening in the south did not touch us, or at least we thought they didn't. Of course now I realize that though things were better for African Americans in the north, they were not living the same carefree lives we were. Less than ten years ago we had a regular customer in the restaurant demand that I not serve a biracial couple! I refused his demand, he walked out and have not seen him since. I think I heard that he passed on a few years back. Did he die thinking that the color of ones skin made them less human? God help us.
Nothing to report just rambling thoughts. I fear for our children, and their children. I fear for our country.
I guess I will take another Tylonol PM and maybe I will get 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
Have a good night all, and if you were born before 1964, bask in your memories! Pull out an old photo album, and look at the real photos. Above all, put down that phone/tablet or laptop! If you follow my advise, take photos of some of your old (real) photos and drop them in the comments.
