So I saw a video that asked people:
“Can you name five books of the Bible besides the first five?”
Immediately in my head I’m like… Matthew, John, Psalms, Isaiah, Proverbs… hold on, let me make sure before I embarrass myself 😅😂
But as I kept watching, the laughter kind of left me.
Some people couldn’t name one.
Some were confidently naming books that aren’t even in the Bible — somebody said “Steven” 😭
And others simply said, “I don’t read the Bible.”
Then one person said, “I don’t read the Bible, I’m more spiritual.”
And that one really made me think.
Because in a world where we hear so much about being “spiritual,” it made me ask myself: What are we allowing to feed our spirit if we don’t know the Word for ourselves?
And before anybody thinks I’m judging — I’m talking to ME too.
I don’t read my Bible every single day like I know I should. I’m not a Bible scholar. I can’t quote every scripture or tell you exactly where every story is located.
But what I do know, I try to carry with me.
When I’m scared, I remember His Word.
When I’m discouraged, I remember His Word.
When somebody I love is hurting, I find myself reaching for His Word.
When life doesn’t make sense, I remind myself of what God has already promised.
And then Matthew 15:8 came to me:
“This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.” — Matthew 15:8 (KJV)
WHEW. 😮💨
Because that scripture made me check myself.
It’s easy to say, “I believe in God.”
It’s easy to post a scripture.
It’s easy to say “God got me.”
It’s easy to call on Him when life gets hard.
But where is my heart?
Am I only honoring Him with my mouth, or am I truly making room for Him in my heart, my choices, my habits and my everyday life?
That video was an eye-opener for me.
Not because I walked away thinking, “Look at them.”
I walked away thinking, “Lord… look at US.”
We know lyrics.
We know trends.
We know celebrities.
We know social media.
We know what everybody else is doing.
But do we know Him?
Do we know His Word enough to recognize when something doesn’t line up with it?
And I felt convicted because God is reminding me that knowing about Him is not the same as intentionally spending time with Him.
So this isn’t a judgment post.
It’s a reminder.
A conviction.
And honestly… a confirmation for me.
Father, we need You more than ever RIGHT NOW.
Help us hunger for Your Word again.
Help us seek You beyond Sunday morning.
Help us not only honor You with our lips while allowing our hearts to drift far away.
Help us teach our children who You are.
Help us recognize Your voice in a world filled with so many others competing for our attention.
And most importantly…
Start with ME, Lord. 🙏🏾❤️
Before I point a finger at anybody else, search my heart. Correct me. Teach me. Draw me closer.
Because I don’t just want my mouth to know Your name…
I want my heart to know You. ❤️🙏🏾📖
