Good Morning Hillsborough!

Happy Hog Day weekend everyone! We have lots of treats for you this morning: cherry pie, pumpkin pie and the last of the peaches for the season peach blackberry crumble pie. Also made a few dirt pudding cups in the cooler for you. All proceeds for the dirt cups will go to Porch. Also, no pizza today. It’ll be back next week! Hello September!

It’s a perfect weekend to check out our new drink specials! We will be open on Monday for Labor Day. And baked goods, however, will be limited these next couple weeks.

When Ryan told me of Dolly’s passing, I was immediately thrown into my Grandmother’s kitchen, listening to the country music channel and watching her cook. My grandmother, like Dolly, was kind, gracious and a fantastic cook/baker. She loved Dolly and made me a lifelong Dolly fan.

Dolly instilled tradition into our lives, keeping Appalachia alive in her songs and stories. She kept moving forward, never judging a person and always accepting them for who they want to be. She inspired me to take care of my community, welcome anyone and everyone into my place.

I never got to tell Dolly how much her music meant to me. How much her philanthropy meant to the world. I heard rumblings and seen pictures of her in Carrboro back in 2009. Wishing she could step foot into my shop just to hug her. But it never happened. Unfortunately.

Like the women before us, I love to bake. Especially recipes that mean so much to my own traditions. Today I made blackberry lemon curd kolaches. A little mix of my Czech traditions and new Southern traditions that I’ve learned in my past twenty years in NC. Along with Grandma Pauline’s lemon meringue pie in the case.

Sometimes an anniversary calls for something special-something that brings everyone together. Cup-A-Joe will be celebrating 10 years in our current location in Hillsborough.
Ten years of coffee, community, and sweet treats, paves the path for the perfect celebration: A Community Cake Picnic that benefits the Hillsborough chapter of PORCH Hillsborough , a non-profit that works to fight hunger in northern Orange County, North Carolina, by mobilizing neighbors, building community, and providing fresh, healthy food.

Bakers! Are you interested in donating a cake, please send me an email to [email protected] . Not a baker, stop by Saturday, October 3rd 12-3 and purchase a slice or maybe two 💜
