UNEXPECTED.

Last night I worked as the barista for our watercolor class. Each ticket comes with any drink of your choice, and after placing her order, one of the attendees looked at me and said:

“I know that I know you from somewhere…”

Now. In my world, I’m ALWAYS recognized. And, undoubtedly, people recognize me from the coffee shop. Logical.

So it was wildly unexpected to be standing IN said coffee shop and have someone not be able to place me.

And in the approximately 2.5 seconds it took for her to finish her sentence, my brain went through approximately a bijillion possibilities.

How do you say… here? Do I say the coffee shop?

Do I reference the floor falling apart? Does she not realize this is the same coffee shop, just new digs?!

Then she goes— “TAG DAY! You’re the Tag Day Mom!”

😂😂😂

Why yes. Yes, I am.

I did, in fact, help lead Davidson Marching Band’s Tag Day back in August.

And I laughed because it’s been a minute since I’ve been recognized for something OTHER than the coffee shop.

Unexpected.

And honestly, that word seems to fit life pretty well right now.

Yesterday alone brought more than a dozen unexpected conversations with customers. Unexpected surgeries. Good news from doctors. Hard family stuff. Big decisions. Questions completely out of left field. Some joyful. Some heavy. Some that simply needed someone willing to listen.

Little reminders that life is happening to all of us.

And there’s plenty of unexpected in my world too.

This afternoon we meet with the architect. I’m excited. Truly. But if I’m being honest, I’m also overwhelmed by this process. There are SO many things I don't know.

And next week is Coffee Fest, so we’re knee-deep in preparing for a festival with 10k+ people—except this year we’re doing it while still figuring out life in our new digs.

I don't know where I put that darn prize wheel. Perhaps it will surface. 😂

Add in staff transitions and parenting and normal LIFE...

It can get heavy pretty quickly.

Then this morning, I read the verse of the day:

“My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” — Exodus 33:14

And THAT was the reminder I needed.

Not that everything is going to go how I expect. Not that I’ll suddenly have all the answers. Not even that the unexpected things will all be good. But that I don't walk into any of them alone.

His presence goes with me.

Into the architect meeting.

Into Coffee Fest.

Into the conversations I didn't see coming.

Into the parenting stuff.

Into whatever happens next.

I don't have to know what's around the corner to take the next step. And neither do you.

So might I encourage you this Friday, friends?

When life feels heavy, unknown, or just plain unexpected—

Keep going.

Take the step that's in front of you.

You don't have to figure out the whole journey today.

His presence goes with you.

Even into the unexpected.

Happy Friday, friends.

THE HOODIES ARE HAPPY.

The weather finally decided to feel a little fall-ish.

Which means the faint cries coming from our hoodies in the closet have finally stopped. 😂

They’ve been waiting for this moment.

And speaking of hoodies—we made some new ones in honor of our 10th birthday! Gold ink or some of our fave designs was the perfect way to commemorate our golden birthday.

They’re in stock at the shop now for $25.

Come grab one while we have ’em.

Happy fall-ish weather, friends. 🍂☕️

BEGIN

The text: Mom, can you help me with my gov assignment when I get home?

The response: Absolutely.

Never mind that government was NOT my favorite subject.

And it's a college class. 😂

After dinner, I sat down with Aunnica to look at the assignment. It was a discussion post with required citations, and I attempted to help her understand what was actually being asked of her.

Halfway through my less-than-super-clear attempts to help, I told her:

Kid, this assignment is the kind that is SO much harder to JUST get started. I believe it's so much simpler than it seems. BUT starting is daunting. You just need to do it. Get some words on the page, and it really isn't as overwhelming as it seems right now...

Sure enough, she connected with a friend, got some words on the page, and once she started—she was able to finish it.

(And I think she did a stellar job. Biased? Perhaps.)

Funny how sometimes the words you say to your kids are actually words you need to hear yourself.

Yesterday, I finally sat down to tackle something I'd been moving from one day's to-do list to the next. Punting it down the road.

It felt complicated. There were things I didn't understand. And every day I didn't start, it somehow felt bigger.

Then I started. And in about two hours, I had nearly finished the thing that had been hanging over my head for weeks.

Huh.

Turns out I needed my own advice.

And if I'm being truthful, that's kind of where life is right now.

There's a lot we don't know.

Nothing could have prepared us for the summer we had. Sales aren't what they once were. And now we're standing at the beginning of another big project with possible construction upstairs and approximately one bajillion questions.

How long will it take? I don't know.

How will all the funding come together? That's on Jesus.

And approximately one bajillion other questions? No clue.

I can look at ALL of that at once and become completely overwhelmed.

Or...

I can take the step I can see.

I don't need to see the whole staircase. Jesus can.

My part?

Start.

Take the step that's in front of me and trust Him with the ones I can't see yet.

So might I encourage you this Friday, friends?

Just start.

Don’t let what you don’t know keep you from doing what you do know.
You don't have to figure it all out today. You don't have to see the whole staircase.

Just start. One step.

And trust Jesus with the rest.

Happy Friday, friends.

It started with an idea… 🍎

What if we put apple pie in a chai?

And apparently that idea also involved Nate juggling apples in an orchard. 😂

Our Apple Pie Chai starts with Anna’s house-made chai recipe—the chai we’ve been making ourselves for years.

Then comes our apple pie mixture—real apple, cinnamon, spices, and all the good stuff you’d expect to find in an apple pie.

Put those two together, add your milk of choice, pour it over ice and…

Apple Pie Chai.

Sweet. Spiced. Refreshing. And very fall—even when Ohio isn’t quite ready to cooperate with the temperature.

Made downstairs.

MONDAYS | 8AM–12PM | MOBILE ORDERS ONLY 📱☕️

Place your order online, we'll make it, and your completed order will be waiting for you outside.

And if you don't see it?

Knock on the kitchen window. 😂

That's it. Coffee Connections without even having to come downstairs.

Mondays look a little different around here.

One of the fun parts of sharing this building is that Sundays are pretty busy around here. So Monday gives us a chance to reset the downstairs, get everything back where it belongs, and get ready to welcome you back in on Tuesday.

But that doesn't mean we're making you wait until Tuesday for coffee. ☕️

Honestly, it might be our most introvert-friendly day of the week. 😂

Monday Mobile Orders | 8am–12pm

Order ahead. Grab your coffee. Get on with your Monday.

Fall. But make it iced. 🍂🧊

Because it's September in Ohio and apparently we're doing fall flavors with 80-degree weather. 😂

We're good with it.

🍎 Apple Pie Chai

🎃 Pumpkin Spice Latte

🍁 Salted Maple Latte

All the fall. None of the sweater weather required.

(Even if my hoodies are quietly crying in the closet.) 😂

Which one are you grabbing?

And hey—we're celebrating TEN YEARS today at For the Love of Hilliard from 11–2. Come hang out with us.

WHATEVER

Today evokes all the emotions.

A day to remember for us all, 9/11, for me has always also been my dad's birthday.

And this year, it hits different.

It's birthday week in my world. Yesterday was the shop's birthday, today is my dad's, and Sunday is my birthday.

This second week of September has always been one for celebration.

But this year, I knew it would be so much harder.

Today would have been my dad's 69th birthday. Since his passing last fall, I've anticipated the waves of grief this week would bring.

Little did I know what the summer would have in store too.

It's truly been wild around here.

This morning, I've been reminiscing.

My dad was a real-life Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor.

He ALWAYS helped. Even if he had no idea what to do.

Fall off the roof while fixing shingles and break his arm? Check.

Ride a backhoe into a construction site and gash his leg? Check.

Run the car over my dominant foot? Check.

There are countless stories.

The time my mom had to explain to the insurance company that the telephone pole really did FALL on our car—she didn't hit it, my dad dropped it on the car—that was another good one for the books.

The thing is, my dad lived every day of his life with this truth:

Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might, as unto the Lord.

It was at the core of his being.

So when, at the young age of 47, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's, he didn't let it stop him.

The "whatevers" he found to do simply changed.

And I realized something this morning.

That legacy he left has impacted my core.

In more ways than I've probably even acknowledged, this summer's ability to pivot, trust Jesus, and find our new "whatevers" has been inspired by his legacy.

So might I encourage you this Friday, friends?

Find your whatever.

Life is challenging. That's certain. And it's full of more unknowns ahead.

But whatever may come, I know who is walking alongside me.

I don't have to have all the answers. I don't have to know what the next season looks like.

I just have to look at what's in my hands today.

And whatever I find there—whatever opportunity to love, to serve, to build, to help, to encourage, to begin again—I can do it with all my might, as unto the Lord.

My dad's "whatever" changed a lot throughout his life. And this summer, so did mine.

Maybe yours has changed as well.

Sometimes faithfulness looks like finding the new whatever God has placed in front of you—and giving yourself fully to it.

So today, on what would have been my dad's 69th birthday, as I'm drinking my coffee out of his favorite mug, I'm choosing the WHATEVER.

I'll keep showing up.

Keep trusting Jesus.

Keep finding what's mine to do...

And then do the whatever out of it.

Happy birthday, Dad. Thanks for teaching me how to live the whatever.

Happy Friday, friends.

10 years.

Today, Coffee Connections turns 10.

Ten years of coffee. Ten years of Main Street. Ten years of our girls growing up around this place.

Little did we know what the past decade would hold: highs and lows, a pandemic, being voted Cbus’ Best Local Coffee Shop, and a literal floor falling out from underneath us.

Through it all, God has been so faithful.

We’re incredibly grateful for the past decade—and excited about what the next one could hold.

So, on our 10th birthday, we’re excited to share a little of what we’ve been dreaming about lately.

We’re in conversations with Cornerstone Christian Fellowship about what it could look like to share this space more fully.

We’ve begun working with architects and exploring some very early ideas for how the building could serve both Coffee Connections and Cornerstone long-term.

There are still plenty of conversations to have, details to work through, and decisions to make. Nothing is finalized, and what we’re looking at right now is just the beginning.

But after a summer of so much uncertainty, we’re excited to start asking a different question:

What if this could become a forever home for both of us?

A space where Coffee Connections and Cornerstone can each continue to be who we are while sharing a building and finding new ways to serve our city, build community, and love our neighbors.

There’s a lot more to come.

But on a day when we’re celebrating where we’ve been, it feels pretty special to start dreaming about where we might be going.

Here’s to 10 years—and maybe, just maybe, the beginning of the next 10. ❤️☕️

10 photos from almost 10 years.

This week, Coffee Connections turns 10.

Which means I've spent entirely too much time looking through old pictures. 😂

Ten years is a lot of coffee.

But looking back, it's not even remotely surprising how few of my favorite pictures are actually about the coffee.

They. Are. About. The. People.

They're ridiculous moments. Kids growing up. Staff who became family. Events we probably had no business attempting. Places we never expected to go. People who kept showing up.

So before we celebrate ten years on Thursday, we're spending a little time looking back.

Here are ten pictures from almost ten years of Coffee Connections.

And honestly? Picking ten was impossible.

If you've been part of this story, tell us: what's YOUR Coffee Connections memory?

Seriously. We want to hear them.
