Obon is sometimes called the Japanese Day of the Dead, for it holds very similar meanings and traditions. Should you happen to visit Japan during this beautiful holiday, you'll notice many lights! Family and friends light up lanterns all over to guide the spirits of their ancestors to their homes (pictured), and then light huge bonfires to guide them back. Lanterns are even placed on the water, much like the ones used during the Hungry Ghost Festival in China!

Aside from the lights, a signature tradition of Obon are the elegant dances. During the festivals, huge crowds will gather to partake in traditional choreography to appease and honor their ancestors. These dances are famous for their beauty and often saved until the end of the holiday to help make the last night of the spirits' visit an exciting one!

CAMBODIA'S P'CHUM BEN

P'chum Ben is a 15 day festival in Cambodia. Can you imagine if Halloween was 15 days long? That's a lot of chocolate dipped fortune cookies!

Traditionally, during the first 14 days of this religious festival, families gather at pagodas in order to pray to their ancestors and offer them food (pictured). Hopefully, this will keep bad karma away from their lost loved one's and make the journey to the after life an easy one.
On the 15th day, everyone dresses nicely and offers flowers and rice to the monks at the pagoda. These offerings and favors are meant to help them become more beautiful and nice spirits once they pass!

Modern celebrations of P'chum Ben often center around parents/grandparents. Families buy gifts and have meals and treats with their elders to show their appreciation and love!

SOUTH KOREA'S CHUSEOK

Chuseok is a heavily family based South Korean tradition that celebrates the deceased. During the three-day holiday, people from all over the country make their way back to their hometowns to be with their families. In the morning, these families perform rituals to honor their ancestors which involve tidying up their tombs and graves as well as offering the deceased some food and drink. Traditionally, this is in hopes that their passed loved ones will bless them with a bountiful Autumn harvest. Later in the days, Chuseok is continued with beautiful festivals and meals!

Due to the idea of gathering with family and close friends for a celebratory feast (pictured), Chuseok is often compared to North America's Thanksgiving, however the meanings and customs are very different from each other!

CHINA'S HUNGRY GHOST FESTIVAL

Celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh month on the lunar calendar, The Hungry Ghost Festival is one of many chinese traditions to celebrate and honor past loved ones and ancestors. To do so, they calm them down by burning incense around old paintings and photographs before offering them food and other gifts. Traditionally, the hope is to receive a good blessing from the deceased.

The most notable tradition from the Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival comes at the end. To ensure that their ancestors safely cross back into the afterlife, their names are written on river lanterns (pictured) in hopes that the deceased will follow the lights down the stream and back where they need to go.
