Born in Selerano, Italy (1904), ltalo (Jerry) Barone moved to the United States at the young age of 16. Residing in the city that never sleeps, New York, he soon started working as a dishwasher and a cook. It didn’t take Jerry long to realize his talent for duplicating and perfecting the f
amily recipes he was raised on. Recipes that had been tradition for many generations among his family. The first restaurant opened in Brooklyn in the early 1950′s and was very successful. After vacationing in Miami with his family many times, it was decided that he would open his next restaurant on Biscayne. In 1957, Miami residents came to know “The Reef”, located on Biscayne Blvd. Jerry and his lovely wife, Mary found a partner and a friend, Joe. “Jerry &. Joe’s Pizza” soon took off and became a very popular carry out and delivery store for the local residents of Hialeah. Jerry Barone sold the business to the Hormilla family in 1972. It was then that Jerry and Mary retired in the city of Port Charlotte, FL. In 1978 Jerry & Joe’s Pizza was purchased by another Cuban family. The Cruz family still owns and operates the restaurants in the same traditional way that Jerry did. And with your support we will continue to grow with your family
