Savor – A Buck I’ll Never Forget

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of emotions.

Watching the weather in early October, we noticed the first cold front hitting around the 7th. We made plans to head to Illinois for our first sit of the year. I rarely hunt October mornings, but our #1 buck, “Savor,” hit this scrape in daylight on September 30th. With dropping temps and recent rain, I just had a feeling he might do it again. With a bulletproof entry and the perfect wind, the stage was set.

Well, the plan came together. Savor showed up at that scrape just 15 minutes after legal shooting light, giving me a 22-yard shot. I drew back, he buried his head in the licking branch, and I touched the trigger. The shot sounded wrong — that horrible “smack” of the front shoulder — and he tore off like a bat out of hell, my arrow stuck in him. My first thought was, how the hell did I screw that up?

To make a long story short, we tracked him for over two miles — with and without a dog — jumped him twice, and eventually had to leave Illinois two days later with that terrible, empty feeling of not finding him.

Then, last Friday, I got one of the best phone calls ever: the landowner had found Savor.

It didn’t go perfectly, and that’s exactly why I wanted to share his story. We watched him grow up, and he’ll be one I’ll never forget. I can’t thank my hunting partner Tal Gearhart , and the landowner enough. Savor truly is a deer of a lifetime — one that will live with me forever. Unofficial score 173 4/8
