The Town and County Club

The Town and County Club A private social club where Members enjoy friendship, dining, community service and a variety of educational opportunities in an historic Asylum Hill mansion.

In 1925 a group of four hundred progressive and determined women committed their resources to form Hartford’s first private women’s city club. They purchased the grand 1895 Theodore Lyman house at 22 Woodland Street and created an organized center for social, intellectual, and artistic gatherings. In the years since then, the members of the Town and County Club have made significant contributions

to the Greater Hartford community and beyond through their personal and professional connections. Their common interests are reinforced by the warm and welcoming atmosphere of their club house, where friendship, gourmet food, and stimulating programs abound in a gracious setting.

Yesterday, The Town & County Club came together for a meaningful Juneteenth celebration, Rhythm of Freedom.

Members and guests were inspired by storyteller Andre Keitt, “The Greatheart Griot,” whose powerful reflections reminded us of the importance of history, culture, resilience, and community. We were also delighted by performances from Dance Like David, whose talented young dancers brought energy and joy to the afternoon, and Elizabeth Lyra Ross-Norman of Opera Connecticut, who shared both her remarkable voice and insights into Connecticut’s rich cultural heritage.

Thank you to our Program Committee, presenters, performers, members, and guests for making this afternoon of storytelling, music, movement, and learning so memorable.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth,
commemorating June 19, 1865. The day news of emancipation finally reached enslaved African Americans in Texas, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

At The Town & County Club, we recognize the importance of remembering our past, celebrating progress, and continuing to foster a community built on understanding, respect, and inclusion.

📸✨ What a wonderful day celebrating community, history, and Hartford at the Nook Farm Lawn Party!

The Town & County Club was proud to join hundreds of neighbors and visitors for an afternoon of music, family activities, local history, art, and fun. From meeting Becky Thatcher and Tom Sawyer, to enjoying lawn games, birthday celebrations, and meaningful community connections, there was something for everyone.

Events like these remind us of the power of bringing people together and preserving the stories that make Hartford such a special place.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible collaborators, the Stowe Center for Literary Activism, Mark Twain House & Museum, and Asylum Hill Neighborhood Association, for creating such a memorable community celebration.

Here’s to another century of connection, culture, and community! 💙

Last night, The Town & County Club welcomed members and guests for “Historical Landmarks That Tell Hartford’s Story” , presented by the Community Engagement Committee and supported by The Lyman Heritage Preservation Foundation, Inc. (501(c)(3)).

Thank you to our distinguished panelists— The Rev. Dr. Eric Hearst, Sally Whipple, and Karen Fisk—and moderator Ilene Frank for sharing the history and significance of some of Hartford’s most treasured landmarks.

The evening concluded with a beautiful performance by musicians from The Hartt School Community Division. Guests also enjoyed floral arrangements and shopping opportunities from Persimmon Petals, whose mission supports women, girls, and families throughout our community.

🎉 Happy Birthday to all of our May birthday members! 🎉

At The Town & County Club, we love celebrating the women who make our community so special. At the end of every month, we gather to honor members celebrating birthdays, sharing friendship and laughter and sweet treats together.

This month’s Birthday Club gathering was made even sweeter by beautiful homemade cupcakes baked by our very own Dining & Events Coordinator, Mary Buschmann.
