The red fox is widespread and abundant in Connecticut and will commonly live in close association with human residences and communities. Each year, the Wildlife Division receives calls from the public concerning foxes denning under porches and sheds. While foxes can become accustomed to human activity, they are seldom aggressive toward people. In just two to three months, when the kits are old enough to fend for themselves, the family will naturally disperse. In the meantime, enjoy the kits at a distance and NEVER feed foxes. Wildlife does not need free food handouts.
Please note that it is not uncommon to see foxes during the day. The mere presence of a fox during daylight hours does not necessarily mean it is sick. The animal’s overall physical appearance and behavior are better indications of whether or not something might be wrong.
