Harsens Island Schoolhouse Grille

Harsens Island Schoolhouse Grille Retired Elementary School transformed into a Cozy Restaurant Harsens Island Schoolhouse Grille is the former Harsens Island School, built in 1934. St. The St.

This, however, was not the first school on the Island. Clair Flats School was opened in 1876. It was a small cottage off the South Channel with a sizeable yard for play. It had 23 desks, students ages 5-15. Clair Flats School closed in 1918 when teacher Mr. Morash of Port Huron went to serve his country in the war effort. He returned. In 1919 the school was consolidated with the Harsens Island School on Little Road, a large white one room building. In 1932, on a winter day, the stove overheated and the school burnt to the ground. A schoolroom was set up at the sommunity center, then across the street from the Post Office on LaCroix Street, until the current building was built. Property for the school was donated by the Yax family - an example of community support that still exists today. A two room schoolhouse with an activity room, eating area, kitchen and staff lounge in the basement would become an Island landmark. Despite thier efforts, the Island parents lost the Island School in 2005. Generations of Island families have attended this school, now, sharing memories and stories over a meal. The building and property sat vacant and slowly deteriorating for two and a half years. Tony and Kristin Bane purchased the building and property solely in January of 2008 and officially opened the restaurant doors in May of 2009. The building now has new purpose, all the while still serving its community.

Well, well, well, it's that time of year again and we couldn't be more excited to share the yard with all of you. The schoolhouse grille on Harsens island hosts the Roots Music Festival with beautiful music, filling the air all day and a vibe you can't beat. Turn your back on the rest of the world and come hangout with the community. Eat great food dance, play games, visit local vendors and talk with your friends. Rain or shine, it's always a great time. Bring a blanket, your favorite lawn chair and prepare for relaxation. We love your fur babies, but on this day, they need to stay home. Coolers are acceptable water only.
We stamp your hand so you can come and go-as-you-please through the day. We start at noon and go until dark. Fire dancing will round out the evening. We hope you'll join us for a beautiful day on Harsens island.

Tonight baby!
