SPREAD EAGLE TAVERN BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE BY PETER JOHNSON
Re-Christened Tavern
On his birthday, Oct 2, 1990, Peter Johnson "re-Christened" the Spread Eagle Tavern & Inn, re-opening this historic landmark to the general public . . . this after an extraordinary, two year restoration, from lower level "Rathskeller" all the way to the fourth floor rafters.
Dates back to 1837
Originally established as a 'canal era' stagecoach tavern & inn back in 1837, by the late 1980's, the Tavernhouse had become dilapidated almost to the point of no return. Then Peter Johnson arrived at the Tavern's public auction . . . on a cold, rainy Autumn day . . . to bid on the building. This rest is history.
"A Labor of Love"
You cannot fully comprehend all that went into this "project", but suffice in knowing that it became "a labor of love" for Peter and Jean Johnson. For now, you may just want to take a drive out to historic Hanoverton and see the place for yourself . . . come for lunch or dinner. Or plan to spend the night.
His Birthday
But if you come to the Tavern on October 2nd, that's a *special* day ~ because it was Peter Johnson's birthday . . . and he made "the tavern" all happen on that day, back in 1990 . . . and we have operated ever since, seven days per week, for the past 36 years.
โ Happy Birthday, Peter Johnson โ
