Founded by Karen Amaker, Good for the Soul Food pays tribute to the rich culinary traditions of soul food and Jamaican cuisine, serving soulful classics. In 2021, after w
orking as an educator for over 25 years, I purchased a small school bus to start my food truck business, with my dad by my side during this crucial first step. Transforming the bus into a food truck has been a labor of love ever since. I am now the proud owner of Good for the Soul Food—a fusion of soul food and Jamaican cuisine. This concept for my food truck and catering business was inspired by my desire to share my passion for food creation and to continue my father’s legacy in the food industry. The joy of cooking and entrepreneurship is deeply rooted in my family’s DNA. My mom shared her culinary skills, while my dad, Raymond, was a food entrepreneur. He was the former owner of Candy Land and The Smoke House. His last venture before retirement, and his untimely passing in 2022, was a food truck called Ray’s Ribs, which he owned and operated for over 20 years in Hartford, Connecticut. As a young adult, I witnessed firsthand what it takes to start, grow, and sustain a food business. Food culture is what brings us together. In line with that belief, I create dishes that food lovers will enjoy. Good for the Soul Food features a rotating and seasonal menu highlighting signature dishes from African American and Jamaican cultures, such as mac and cheese, candied yams, fried chicken, festival, curry chicken, rice and peas, and many other options. By utilizing high-quality ingredients, Good for the Soul Food consistently provides made-from-scratch, flavorful meals that offer convenience and options whenever you desire something that nourishes both spirit and body.
