In Pennsylvania, it’s not a “sub.” It’s a hoagie and there’s history behind that name.The term traces back to Philadelphia shipyard workers who loaded fresh Italian rolls with meats, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, oil, vinegar, and hot peppers during long workdays.

Over time, “hoggie” became hoagie, and it became part of Pennsylvania culture. A real hoagie starts with the roll: seeded, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside. Then it’s stacked the right way with quality meats, sharp cheese, fresh toppings, oil, vinegar, and seasoning.

Anywhere else, it’s just a sandwich.
