70 years ago today, students at South High gathered around a television set in the cafeteria to watch Game 5 of the 1956 World Series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees. WCPS had given permission for the game to be available on the school's closed circuit and for one of the TVs used for CCTV education to show the game. What they witnessed that afternoon in the cafeteria became one of the biggest moments in MLB history as Yankees pitcher Don Larsen pitched the first - and so far only - perfect game in World Series history.

70 years later, that game is once again playing on TVs inside the cafeteria for students to view. During all four lunch shifts today, students will have the opportunity to watch the TV broadcast of Don Larsen's perfect game, just like students did 70 years ago today when South High was only about a month old.

Small wallets, clutches, and phone cases under 5 inches by 7 inches (5” x 7”) are allowed, along with medically necessary items, disability-related accommodations, and diaper bags when attending with a child under age 3. Additionally, outside food and beverages are not permitted in the stadium

On the same day the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, kicking off the Cold War Space Race (October 4, 1957), the varsity football teams from North and South faced off on the gridiron for the first time. The Week 4 contest was played at School Stadium in front of an estimated crowd of 6,700.

Although “the split” happened the fall before this game, the 1957 season was the first for both schools in football. The city championship game was put right in the middle of the season on the field shared by both schools on the campus of South High.

In the Morning Herald’s story previewing the game, Rebels head coach Doug Cochran was quoted saying “it will be a good, close ball game. I believe North High will definitely be our toughest opponent so far.”

Terry Myers, a 140 pound wingback, was among the players to watch mentioned in the article, saying he “has lots of drive for a little guy and is especially elusive on the reverses around the ends.”

Meanwhile, the Hubs were noted as having an eight-pound per-man weight advantage against the Rebels. They also had the best rushing offense average (107) and best defense against rushing in the matchup.

The Rebels were the receiving team to begin the game. The offense went to work immediately, putting together a 64-yard drive on a dozen plays. On the third play of the drive, tailback Terry Bailey threw a 45-yard pass to Ed Martin, bringing South to the North 26. A handful of plays later, Myers scored from the 6 on a reverse play for the first TD in series history.

In the second quarter, North’s Vernon Lewis returned an interception to the Rebel 17. Three running plays later, Ronnie Hawkins scored on a pitch play from the 8 to tie the game.

From there, the game became plagued with turnovers on both sides. South came close to scoring a go-ahead TD early in the fourth when a 34-yard pass from Bailey to Dennis Dwyer was called back due to a penalty. North came as close as a fourth-down jump pass from the 5 going uncaught. North finished with five fumbles. The Rebels lost 70 yards to penalties.

To this day, the first matchup in the Gridiron Classic is the only matchup to end in a tie. A handful of matchups have gone into overtime, but each had a winner.

On Friday, October 30, the Gridiron Classic returns to School Stadium for the 70th meeting between the two city schools. Kickoff is scheduled for 6pm with a special ceremony celebrating the 70th matchup taking place before kickoff.

This program was printed by supporters of North High but is preserved as an important piece of history in the South High historical archive collection. This program, along with other artifacts related to the North-South series, will be on display during South High’s 70th anniversary celebration on October 24 and again during the Gridiron Classic on October 30.

*Schedule change* Due to a county-wide shortage of officials, the location of the 10/6 varsity boys soccer game against North Hagerstown has been changed. The boys will now play a varsity doubleheader with our girls team at North High.
