🎸 Saturday, October 3 — Kick off the weekend with the Sunset Concert on the green space next to the Markham and Mississippi Aquarium! Music starts at NOON and keeps going through 9 PM!

🔥 Sunday, October 4 — The party spreads throughout Downtown Gulfport with live music on FOUR stages! Catch your favorites at the Main Stage, Chandeleur Porch, Fishbone Alley South Side, and Sully’s Stage throughout the day.

There’s a reason this Hattiesburg steakhouse is called Sully’s.

And it has nothing to do with the owner’s last name.

The restaurant sits on Sullivan Kilrain Road, not far from where John L. Sullivan and Jake Kilrain fought one of the most famous bare-knuckle boxing matches in American history.

Sully’s says the restaurant was named as a tribute to that fight.

That’s a pretty great origin story for a steakhouse.

The place started out more like a neighborhood bar and live-music spot, but the food became a big enough draw that Sully’s turned into a destination of its own.

And they take the steak part seriously.

The steaks are never frozen, the loins are hand-trimmed and each steak is cut to order before hitting the char grill.

There’s seafood too, including Gulf shrimp, ahi tuna and shrimp and grits, plus burgers and rotating chef specials.

What I’d Order

The 16-ounce prime ribeye.

Sully’s calls ribeye its favorite cut, and that seems like the appropriate order at a place whose entire identity involves steaks, live music and a bare-knuckle fight.

There are plenty of restaurants with interesting names.

It’s a lot better when there’s actually a story behind one.
