Happy National Ice Cream 🍦 Day. We had the honor of speaking at the last town hall meeting to just talk about the history of this tradition. In the United States, National Ice Cream Month is celebrated each year in July, and National Ice Cream Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in July 19th.
The purpose of National Ice Cream Month is to celebrate the popular frozen treat while honoring the significant economic contributions of the U.S. dairy and ice cream industries.
The purpose of the holiday—which is observed annually on the third Sunday of July alongside National Ice Cream Month—was to encourage Americans to gather for "appropriate ceremonies and activities" to cool off and celebrate with friends and family. Today, the day is widely used by local creameries and major chains to offer special discounts, free scoops, and limited-edition flavors.
The celebrations were originated by Joint resolution 298 in the United States Senate, which was sponsored by Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky on May 17, 1984, and Joint resolution 543 in the United States House of Representatives, which was sponsored by Representative Kika de la Garza of Texas on April 11, 1984. The resolution proclaimed the month of July 1984 as "National Ice Cream Month" and July 15, 1984 as "National Ice Cream Day". It was signed into public law by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1984, with Presidential Proclamation 5219 as he highlighted that ice cream was enjoyed by over 90% of the American population and that the industry supported thousands of jobs and utilized roughly 10% of all milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers.
