It’s been 16 years since my Dad, Russell, left us way too early. Yesterday I was putting one foot in front of the other during the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation Walk Across Southeastern CT Marathon Walk. I had plenty of time to think about how much I missed him. I can usually get distracted at work for a bit. He was my Father, my best friend, my business partner, my world. My heart breaks knowing I will never see him come back into the restaurant, say a few words to me either over the phone or in person, or be at the finish line to tell me how proud he was of me.
As I was walking I was listening to songs that he liked and it made me think of him which had me tearing up in the middle of the walk. Then seeing my kids Austin and Connor’s after their busy morning, they still got there with my unbelievable wife, Steph to walk a 5K to be supportive of me. You guys are my world now. That kind of support from them, my Mom Luann, who made sure I was there on time with my ride and was clapping like a mad woman at the finish line, my sister Michele who reached out to make sure I was good, and my brother in-law Jim who asked if I needed a ride there and made sure I was doing fine during the walk- I can’t find the words to express my gratitude. To the team members Danielle, Teach, Wonder, Diesel and more who dropped a line to check on me either early this morning or throughout the walk, it means so much. Even though my dad had a special place in his heart for the foundation, I wanted to say thank you to the community. They have been the ones helping all of us keep his dream of The Shack Restaurant alive. To the team, some of you had a chance to know Russ before he left us so early. Some of you never did but get to hear the stories. Thanks again for all the hard work and dedication to the dream. So hopefully we will see you at one of the three stores soon to show your support to his dream, enjoy your meal, and possibly even supporting the TBBCF this month while you are there (ask the staff how). I am usually a man of few words like Russ but today my mom’s side got a hold of me 😂. I love and miss you so much Dad. I hope you are proud of my work and the father I have become. Lastly it’s Sunday so let’s go NYG and Go Pack Go!!!!!
