It is located on 106 South Broad Street and has been going for 44 years. Originally named Luigi’s Pizza, the name was changed due to an already existing name of a pizza company in Gary, Indiana. The original owner owned the company from 1967-1984. The second owned the company from 1984-1990. The third Tony Holbrook took over until 2000, and the current owner, Mike Kime, has been running the company ever since. During his time as owner of Squigi’s Pizza, Mike and his wife Beth have helped the company grow. Since his arrival new fryers have been installed, the interior has restored and improved, and new menu items have been added. When asked how Mike was able to do so much, he said “well I’ve had a lot of help.” The fryers he was able to acquire from Plaza Lanes in Highland, Indiana, the interior revamping was a combined effort of friends, family, and hard work, and the new menu items came from the help of Chris Fortuna of Battaglia Distributing. Not only do they now serve their famous pizza, but they now make subs, sandwiches, and an array of different sides. They have a page and have been part of local festivals including Saint Mary’s Western Days as well as the Rock and Rail Fest. Both of which are held in Griffith. As the years went by, other pizza companies began to pop up around Lake County, in Griffith, and even on the same street as Squigi’s. Langel’s Pizza in Highland, Aurelio’s off Ridge Road in Griffith, and John’s Pizzeria on Broad Street in Griffith are just some of the examples. When the owner, Mike of Squigi’s Pizza, was asked about how he felt about all of the competition around, he said “competition is actually a good thing. People go around and they may come to our place or someone else’s, but because we’re all so close together people want to try out all the rest to see which one they prefer.”
A lot has changed from the owner to the menu, but one thing’s for sure. The quality and determination remain high. Head to Squigi’s Pizza to enjoy a one of a kind pizza and learn why this hometown pizzeria has been going strong for over 40 years and is sure to keep going for many more years to come.
