At this Mississippi steakhouse, you don’t walk past the kitchen to get to your table. You walk straight through it.
Doe’s Eat Place has been serving Greenville since 1941, but the story began inside a family grocery store that dated back to 1903. Dominick “Big Doe” Signa and his wife Mamie started selling hand-rolled Delta hot tamales before a doctor friend suggested they try cooking steaks too.
That suggestion helped create one of Mississippi’s most famous restaurants.
The One to Try
Come hungry and get one of the enormous hand-cut steaks, with some cuts large enough to share family-style. But don’t skip the Delta hot tamales. They’re made from a family recipe that helped launch Doe’s in the first place.
Walk Through the Kitchen
The original Greenville location still operates inside the old family building, and walking through the front door puts you directly into the kitchen. You pass the broiler, steaks, fries, salads, and people cooking before reaching the dining rooms.
Doe’s has remained in the Signa family for generations, and in 2007 it received a James Beard America’s Classics Award.
More than 80 years later, you can still walk through the same kitchen for a steak and tamales.
If you’ve made the trip to Doe’s, is it really worth the hype?
