Baby Back Ribs - Weekend Cookout Favorites

Summer is here and this is barbeque weather. Unfortunately, the heat and humidity hit so quickly that most of us aren’t ready to stand by a hot grill long enough to satisfy that craving for real smoked meat. Let us do that for you tomorrow, we will be making that Lake Area barbeque favorite: baby back pork ribs. Join us tomorrow evening for the Monday special - baby back pork ribs.

We tried searching for those “cute little” baby back ribs that you can eat a whole rack without much effort; but we decided that really isn’t how we do things at 5Bs. Instead, we sourced some excellent quality, healthy sized ribs that will fill you up and never let you down. To keep them a little different and special, we are smoking these and basting them with a sweet sauce that will make the ribs sticky, moist, juicy and flavorful. Because this special is clearly BBQ, we will serve it the same way we serve our other barbeque - as a plate (with a half-rack of ribs and 2 sides) for $20, or as a platter (with a full rack of ribs and 2 sides) for $30. We will not be offering just ribs - too complicated to program into our purchasing system. We hope to see you on Monday, June 15, for our Monday special or one of our other barbeque favorites. Chicken Fried Steak

Now it’s time for something we don’t cook often at home; but love to eat when we go out - chicken fried steak. Now for the educational portion of the update: we have done this special once or twice and called it Country Fried Steak. One of our customers was kind enough to tell us that with the white gravy, it is actually “chicken fried” instead of “country fried”. Turns out, Google agrees; there are some breading and cooking variations between Chicken Fried Steak and Country Fried Steak; but the biggest visual difference is white gravy (on chicken fried steak) and brown gravy (on country fried steak). I like nearly all gravy, but our dish at 5B’s has the thicker breading and the white gravy of chicken fried. How about that for a little extra credit for our weekly post?

As a restaurant that serves barbeque, we should also spend a little time and effort on good southern cooking from time to time. This special is just that; a half pound portion of chicken fried steak, and it will be served with our mashed potatoes, green beans, and white gravy. To really make it a bonafide Southern special, we will also be serving this one with a biscuit. Yep - my mouth is watering just writing about it.

5B French Dip Sandwich

The special for tomorrow is a French Dip sandwich. The weather just isn’t feeling like a heavy Monday special - it feels like it needs a good sandwich to lighten the day and give us some extra pep. To be honest, one of our employees has kinda been wanting this special for a little while now; and it seems like a good time to make it happen.

We occasionally do a cheesesteak sandwich; and we know how much we like a good strip loin. We want to do the same with our French dip sandwich. We acquired a few New York Strip loins that look amazing, and we plan to introduce those to our slicer to give us just the right protein for a delicious sandwich - especially after we simmer it in a rich beef broth and grill it on our flat-top and add some grilled onions, grilled portabellas, and a slice of provolone cheese on top of a baguette roll. We hope this simple pleasure sounds as delicious to you as it does to us.

The 5B French dip sandwich will be served with a choice of one of our regular sides, and will be priced at $17. Tomorrow is the last Friday of the month - It's a Tim Night!!! It is also Beef Rib night. That sounds like a winning combination to me; why don't you come on down to 5B's and enjoy both as well as a beverage of your choice. Beef ribs will be available at 5pm while they last (you can reserve them tomorrow starting at 11am to be picked up at your preferred time). Tim and the Tailgate should start playing around 6 to 6:30. We are keeping a close eye on the weather and will make the call closer to show time tomorrow afternoon on whether they perform inside or outside.

Back so Soon?: The Chicago Dog and Chili Dog Special

We hope each of you is enjoying a great Memorial Day holiday weekend here in Lake Country. Memorial Day weekend is known for grilling out, spending time with family and friends, and remembering the sacrifices of so many that allow us the freedoms that we enjoy today. We, at 5B’s, share those feelings. We also believe that any Monday should have a good special that helps us to celebrate the day and the country we share. Last year, we did a hot dog special for Memorial Day and we are doing the same again this year. Combine that with the requests for a Chicago Dog repeat, and we are including the Chicago Dog in that mix.

A hot dog is the quintessential backyard barbeque fare; but we are “kicking it up a notch”. We will start with a pair of all-beef hot dogs from Nathan’s and nestle them gently into a delicious poppy seed bun. To top them off, you will have a choice of 2 of either a chili dog, a slaw dog, or a Chicago dog. We tried them last year and added the Chicago dog from a birthday tribute dinner this year; and they have all been a hit!!! We think you will love them, too. We will be serving the hot dog plate with a side of your choice for only $15. Like all specials, we have it ready to serve starting at 5pm. We hope each of you will come and see us and enjoy our special or stick with one of our traditional barbeque favorites. We will be open from 11am - 9pm as usual.

The Dawn of a New Era: Beef Rib Friday

Let’s see if we can start a new tradition: Friday evenings with beef ribs at 5B’s.

When people decide to open restaurants, they typically have lots of ideas of things they want to do, dishes they want to cook, and how customers will enjoy certain things. Well, just like any endeavour, plans have to be streamlined, edited, and paired back to what is feasible and functional at the time. The beauty of that is that over time, as operations become more routine and consistent, several of those ideas that got edited out along the way can make a comeback. Here comes Beef Rib Friday for its debut!

That’s right, not only did we want to do a weekly special of “typically” non-barbeque food, we wanted to do a weekly beef rib….just because it is yummy. Here are the details: these are big, rich, slow smoked beef ribs from the blade section of the cow. When we say big, we are taking a 7 lb rack of 3 rib bones, smoking it, and then cutting it into two portions. That’s right, the pre-cooked weight of these is about 3-3.5 lbs per order. We have done smaller beef short-ribs for a Monday night special and they are great: we want these to be spectacular. We don’t say it serves 2 people, but we do include 3 sides in case you want to share.

Here is where beef ribs really differ from our traditional menu and specials: we allow them to be reserved! We cook only a limited number, and we want to make sure we sell them all to cover the cost. To help with that, we allow them to be pre-ordered on the day of. So, today (Friday), you could call the restaurant during normal hours and reserve a serving for take-out or for dine-in. In fact, I would recommend reserving it….I tried a test-fire last week, and I think this will be a new “thing” for 5B’s. I am certainly hoping so.

Starting at 5pm in the evening for dinner, we will offer a limited number of beef ribs for dine-in or take-out. It will be a hefty sized beef rib, seasoned and smoked to magnificent deliciousness and accompanied by 3 sides of your choice and the traditional Hawaiian roll for $42. They can be reserved ahead of time by calling the restaurant at (706) 920-1129 during our normal business hours. So, start your Memorial Day weekend with a full belly. Come on down to 5Bs for our Beef Ribs or one of our barbeque favorites. We will be open from 11am - 9pm as usual. (But the Beef Ribs won’t be available until 5pm.)

Gentle Reminder and a Gentle Curry: Butter Chicken

First things first - Tomorrow’s special will be butter chicken. (That’s why most people open this note.)

The Reminder: Next weekend is Memorial Day weekend. At the lake, this means the summer really ramps up; and we like to think of it as the first BBQ holiday of the year. As such, if you want to call and pre-order take-out; please feel free to do so. It helps us plan our smoker space for the weekend and to prevent us from running out of any of the customer favorites….especially if that customer may have guests in town. Just give us a shout at any time during normal business hours and we will be pleased to assist you.

Now - for the details on the butter chicken special: This is a favorite of several of our staff and a frequently requested special. I like butter chicken as a savory alternative to traditional stews and soups. It has all the qualities a comfort food should have; and it is also a flavor change to the palette that really hits the spot. For those of you that have tried traditional curries in the past and have come away with toasted taste buds and a healthy fear - this dish is for you. It has the spice elements that attracted me to Indian food without the peppery heat that scares people away. It is simply delicious. (Note to our friends with robust taste-buds that like the heat - we always have Trinidadian pepper sauce on hand that will add a flavorful heat to darn near anything and compliment a curry perfectly.)

Our butter chicken recipe was adapted from an online recipe from Coles supermarket in Australia. We found it to be the best mixture for our palettes and the ingredients that we could find locally. It will be made in-house on Monday and served with rice, homemade Palak Paneer (spinach with paneer cheese), and a flat of naan bread. Starting at 5pm in the evening for dinner, we will offer a butter chicken dinner plate for $16. It will be a generous serving of butter chicken, garnished with some fresh cilantro, and accompanied by the rice, Palak Paneer, and naan. Smoked Chicken Alfredo - A Little Bit of Smoke and a Lot of Comfort

Well, tomorrow is Monday, so why not drop into 5B Barbeque and Brews for a delicious dinner of our weekly special - Smoked Chicken and Pasta Afredo. They say it isn’t polite to “toot your own horn”, but we think our smoked chicken breast is wonderful….and perhaps a bit underrated. So, this is a chance for you guys and gals to come give it a whirl with a creamy alfredo sauce over a nice bed of pasta.

This recipe is simple and delicious. Just a nice bed of fresh cooked pasta, tossed in a creamy alfredo sauce, and topped with one of our sliced, smoked chicken breasts. Starting at 5pm in the evening for dinner, we will offer a chicken alfredo dinner plate for $18. It will be a generous serving of chicken alfredo pasta, with side salad and a bread knot. We hope you can all come to 5Bs tomorrow for our Monday special or one of our standard barbeque favorites. We will be open from 11am - 9pm as usual. (But the special won’t be available until 5pm.)
