We started with our Soccer sandwiches of the world on Sunday with France and the Jamon Buerre. Basically, Ham and butter on a baguette. Thank you for all of those who tried the sandwich and the great comments.
Time to move on to another country. This is one we have on the secret menu. Some people ask for it and we make it. (Yes, we have a secret menu) the Torta is the ultimate sandwich. It can include almost any thing as long as you have, pork, jalapeños, salsa, cheese, lettuce, tomato , onion and avocado, and on a Telera.
Mexico.
This is our version, (or one of them!)
Grilled Ham and PorkRoast, white American cheese, lettuce, Salsa Serrano, Mayonnaise, jalapeño’s, avocado, red onion, tomato, on a toasted Telera.
Very filling sandwich with layers of flavor. It leaves you full with a heat on your lips!
Come in and SCORE, Soccer and the sandwich.

Soccer fever has come to town. Trying to find sandwiches that y’all will enjoy that represent teams playing in the World Cup. We are all Football fans now!
I’m starting easy with France. We have the Jamon beurre: Ham and Butter on a Baguette. ( can’t get an easier sandwich to feature)
This is the quip French sandwich also known as as ‘Le Parisien’. Millions are sold in France daily. So many that most deli cases are stacked with them in their display cases. It is just a simple and delicious sandwich.
A little side bar here. Michigan puts butter on more sandwiches than any of our 50 states! So come on you Wolverines and Spartans!
Dare I say it ?
SCORE a sandwich at Weinberger’s

I am starting out this post with the Holy trinity of Chicago Foods, the Beef, the Dog, The Polish( insert Pizza if you’d like but then we get into the deep dish, thin crust debate!)
This time of the year graduation parties are happening all over Chicago. What do people have at graduation parties these days? When I was young there was a special meal on the Southside that was served at graduations , christenings, weddings, almost any momentous occasion. I’m thinking this was big in Polish neighborhoods. How many remember having these: Beef and gravy, Polish sausage, Fried Chicken, and Mostaccioli (Haha even Google is not aware of Mostacioli, at least the spelling).Anyhow, is this still a thing in Chicago? I saw a post where a guy says they had Italian Beef’s, Chicken and Mostacioli, but no Polish. I can’t tell you how many family events I went to growing up and that was the menu. Anyhow, congratulations to the classes of 2026. May your futures be bright.

Some of the best Texas sandwiches hide behind plain doors and handwritten menus.

Here it is your own Weinberger’s Deli App. AND we are installing Kiosks in the new dining section of the deli so you can place an order in house, grab a seat and we will call you when your order is ready. But honestly we like talking to y’all!
IFor those that do not want to stand in line and really like the deli, download our app. Available Apple and Android where apps are located.

I am realizing how old I’m getting when I talk to my customers about my time growing up in Chicago. We live on 62nd and Paulina, the Englewood Neighborhood. When I was six we moved to Dolton. My father was several years into his first deli and a few years from his second. Television was fairly new still. There were three television stations, and one that had every Cubs game!
My dad had the opportunity to buy a meat route in the mid 60s. My father hated being stuck in a store and relished the idea of traveling outside daily.
Growing up I had the opportunity to work in his delis and to work with him on his meat route. There were no child labor laws for me and my siblings. Dad would say he needed you to help and you did. His truck had an AM radio and no air conditioning. Oh, and seatbelts! Hahaha what were those. Traveling through Chicago I saw it all, Back of the Yards, Fulton Street, Maxwell St, Taylor St. Mostly the South side. (Does anyone know what highway separates Southsiders from Northsiders?) The way you answer that either makes you an old Chicagoan or a New Chicagoan.
The picture below is a typical Chicago eatery at the time. Loaded with signs boasting their foods. Unlike New York, Chicago sandwiches were much smaller, 4oz of meat to a sandwich, not a pound. Rye bread and yellow mustard were the condiments, maybe Horseradish.
Italian beef’s? Depending on your neighborhood was how you got your beef. Back then you did not get the opportunity to ask for it a special way. Each joint just served it the way they made it, and you had to find the joint that served it the way you liked it! Pizza, always thin crust cut into squares. Bars? If you did not grow up in Chicago you don’t know what a’bar’ is. (Another post altogether!🤣
So today when I get Chicagoan transplants in my store and they question my authenticity? My family in Chicago goes back, way back! We were there when Chicago burnt to the ground and almost to its incorporation.
They tell me my food is almost as good as in Chicago! Almost! Hahaha. I laugh inside thinking, you will never know the Chicago I know.
A lot of my older customers know what I am talking about. To them I say we were so lucky to grow up in Chicago when we did. Let me know your favorite memories.
