Paws and Claws: The Incredible Mascots of WWII

War is incredibly stressful, but during World War II (and other wars, too), military personnel found comfort in some unexpected furry (and feathery) places.

Unit mascots were the loyal sidekicks of all branches of the military. They marched with the troops, hitched rides on high-flying bombing runs, kept watch over sleeping soldiers, and brought a bit of life to long, lonely voyages at sea. Beyond being excellent company, they boosted morale, cured homesickness, and sometimes even alerted their handlers to unseen dangers.

While dogs were the most common recruits, the military ranks included cats, donkeys, monkeys, bears, pumas, roosters, and parrots. We’ve scoured our archives to bring you fun photos of World War II’s finest and fluffiest heroes.

Furry friends were a huge morale booster to military personnel during World War II. We've combed our archives to find some fun photos!

Join us for LUNCH at Richard Childress Racing this Wednesday, July 8, to celebrate America 250!

Good afternoon to all. Join us if you can.

We will be celebrating “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” to the United States of America again this Wednesday, July 8, at Richard Childress Racing. See attached flyer and information below. THIS IS A LUNCH, NOT A BREAKFAST.

It will be a day of celebration, comradery, good food, entertainment, information and a send off to the US Army for several young recruits, and more. Many of the Richard Childress Racing team members based on campus will be joining us for lunch.

Doors will be open at 10:30, the program will begin at NOON. You are welcome to come early to visit with friends and veteran support community partners. This will allow you time to view the military history exhibit items and an RCR race car. The earlier you arrive on campus, the closer your parking space will be and the more time you will have to enjoy the day. Also, there will be golf carts to bring attendees to the event from some of the further away parking lots.
