In the days leading up to the 25th anniversary of September 11, we’re honored to share reflections from members of our community through poetry.

Their words offer a meaningful way to remember those we lost, and recognize the courage and selflessness shown in the face of tragedy.

This is a poem by Staci. 💙

"A beautiful, crisp, late-summer morning, well underway.
The Big Apple abuzz with normalcy.
Skies are blue.
The subway hums. Wall Street and boardrooms embrace Tuesday.
Travel, business, and tourism in "The City That Never Sleeps."

Five-sided government defense headquarters.
Noble.
Strong.
Recognizable.
Military officials, contractors, children.
One of the safest places in America.

An unassuming field in Pennsylvania; "Penn's Woods."
Bluebird skies.
A field reclaimed from strip mining.
Grasses bending in the breeze.

So much beauty.

Yet, evil men chose to cloak it in loss and heartbreak.

Two towers.
A whole plaza reduced to ruins and embers.
The burning, gaping hole in the five-sided majesty.
And
A blackened, smoldering hole, in what was a peaceful field.
The staggering loss of human life; three airplanes, almost 3,000 souls.

But...

The bravery, selflessness, and heroism is what we remember.
412 first responders, who KNEW. They knew.

Red Bandana.

Rick Rescorla.

Lieutenant Heather Penney.

Bretagne the Golden Retriever.

Flight 93. Todd Beamer.

Let's Roll.

The minutes, days, and weeks followed.
A part of everyone was lost that day.
We raised each other up.

America.
One people.
One dream.
United.
No color. No political party. No agenda.
Just Americans helping Americans.

A little boy... MY little boy... dreamed of being a firefighter. His bluebird eyes looked towards unknown heroes.
He'd grow up in the firehouse.
He'd know the random schedule of holidays.
The sacrifice he and his siblings could be called to make.

I hope they're proud.

I'm nobody special.
I never wanted to be helpless again.
Until my dying breath, I honor the heroes."
