Our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to the man who started it all. We lost a brother, a friend, and the heart behind Mi casita

With profound sadness, we share the passing of my beloved brother, José Herrera, founder of our family’s restaurants, Mi casita.

José and his wife, Velia, arrived in Atlanta in 1983 from Guadalajara, Mexico, chasing the dream of a better life. They began with humble beginnings in the restaurant industry, working long hours and learning every part of the business from the ground up. Through hard work, perseverance, and a passion for serving others, they built the foundation for something special.

In 1992, they moved to Gadsden and opened their first restaurant, Mi casita, in downtown Gadsden on 4th street, as well as a location in Rainbow Plaza. What began as a small family dream quickly became a great success. Over the years, they expanded to open 8 more restaurants, proudly serving communities across Alabama for more than 33 years legacy that continues to this day.

José was more than a founder, he was a guide, a leader, and a friend to many. He inspired our entire restaurant family with his commitment to excellent service, authentic flavors, and the joy of sharing a meal. He taught us to enjoy life, to love what we do, and to serve with our hearts.

We are deeply grateful for his life, for his tireless dedication, and for everyone who has contributed to keeping his dream alive. His legacy is woven into every dish we serve, every smile we share, and every memory created within our walls.

May his memory live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Gregorio Herrera and the Mi casita Family
