In 1945, the late George Sawyer opened his summertime “ice cream stand" at this now famous corner location in Gilford, NH. During the 50's, after a fire destroyed much of the building our present building was reconstructed with the famous turning sign on the roof. George, with his son's Roger and Peter and eventually their families operated the Dairy Bar for over 50 years. Their business grew into

a very successful seasonal business.

15 years ago this piece of real Americana was purchased by Pati and Larry Litchfield. "We are committed to making subtle changes to the property while keeping Sawyers as it has always been... a landmark, where families come to enjoy our homemade premium ice creams, fantastic frappes, fried clams and our famous lobster roll". Of course we also serve delicious fresh seafood, pressure fried fresh chicken, fresh ground Angus burgers and a variety of chowders, sandwiches, wraps, salads and daily specials. Sawyer’s ice creams have been made on the premises since the cows grazed the farmland behind us. We make hundreds of gallons each week, using only the highest quality ingredients. If you have a flavor you would like us to make, please let us know and we will try to add it to our menu. Our employees, consist of over 40 students without whom we could not operate! Our students enjoy working at Sawyer's. Several students begin work while in high school and continue on through college. Consequently we have only a few openings each season.

We need to squelch the rumors. Sawyers is not completely closed. We are happy to say that Ice Cream will remain open.

We gave it our best....it wasn't enough! We had to close our restaurant today. Like many seasonal businesses from Bar Harbor, Maine to Key West, Florida and all points in between. COVID restrictions banned employee travel at the last minute and we lost 12 key staff members.

Simply, we could never return to full strength. We need 12 main kitchen employees to get us through our peak times. We now have only 5.

We are open Memorial Day Weekend from Thursday thru Monday from 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM. Ice Cream will remain open 30 minutes after the Restaurant Closes. Depending upon the weather we may close earlier. Please call to confirm closing times.

If you receive an answering machine message during our normal operating hours we apologize. We are short staffed and terribly busy. Please leave your phone number and we will call you back ASAP.

Please be aware that due to COVID-19 our inside dining and restrooms are temporarily closed. We provide window take-out service only. Our outside seating is limited to 72 patrons. Sanitizer and paper towels are on or near the tables. We will do our best to accommodate you and ask you to practice social distancing. Stay safe, healthy and enjoy yourselves. It's official! Our opening date is Friday, April 24th at 11:30 AM. Due to COVID-19 we are temporarily restricted to window and delivery service for food and ice cream. Our finalized COVID take-out menu will be available to view online on Wednesday of this week. Ice cream will feature 30+ popular flavors at this time. We will add more each coming week.

Hope everybody is doing well through this pandemic. We are still working on stuff for opening at Sawyers but we are getting close.
We plan on opening sooner then planned. We are still not sure of an exact date but the plans are ASAP. It all depends on what happens with COVID-19. We would be opening for take-out only and potentially ice cream. Again we are not sure of a date yet but updates will be posted to this page.
