The Antioch Missionary Baptist Church1298 CR 123 celebrated its 149th church anniversary/Homecoming and Historical Marker dedication on May 24th. The church was organized in 1877, built in 1879. The first Pastor was L.S. Stillwell, the present day pastor is Rev. Leroy Solomon. Some of the early settlers were Nunn, Henegan, Parker, Huff, Wilson, McFarland, Jackson, Shepard, Williams, Henry, Fonovan, Ward, Simpson, and Oliver.
The present-day building was a four-room schoolhouse before it was consolidated with Post Oak School in 1953.
We give Thanks to Rev. Solomon and the Antioch Church family for providing help wherever it was needed. Mr Leslie Chandler, III, Sister Livia Chandler Davis for funding the Historical Marker. Special thanks to Mrs Verdetta Joiner of the Lee County Historical Commission for all her help filling out the application, submitting and assembling the history of Antioch. We started the process in August 2023 and received the marker on January 6, 2026. God has truly blessed us

May is National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) in the United States, designated by Congress to honor, remember, and appreciate service members, veterans, and their families.

Throughout the month,, the U.S. observes several military-related holidays, including Loyalty Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day.

Purpose: NMAM was established to ensure the nation takes time to recognize the sacrifices of the Armed Forces, including those who died in service.

History: Proposed by Senator John McCain and passed by Congress in 1999, it encourages an annual proclamation from the President.

•Key Days in May:

•Loyalty Day (May 1): Recognizes the American spirit.

•Public Service Recognition Week: First full week in May.

•Military Spouse Appreciation Day: Friday before Mother's Day.

•Armed Forces Day: Third Saturday in May, honoring those currently serving.

•Memorial Day: Last Monday in May, honoring those who died in service.

While November is also recognized as National Veterans and Military Families Month, May is exclusively dedicated to military appreciation.

Here's an interesting bit of Giddings history that will be happening in Burton this weekend.

Join us for the dedication of an historical marker honoring Matthew Gaines on Saturday, May 2, at 1 p.m. at Long Life Brotherhood Club in Burton. This marker is part of a state initiative to honor the first African American legislators to serve Texas during Reconstruction. Refreshments will follow the ceremony.

This is St. John's Lutheran Church of Lincoln, Texas. It's the congregation that broke away from Eben Ezer Lutheran Church of San Antonio Prairie (now Ebenezer Manheim; see my post from Monday for more details) in 1886. The present building was completed in 1960, and was designed by Wendish architect Eugene Wukasch.

On March 20, 1957 the previous sanctuary was severely damaged by a windstorm. St. John's pastor, the Rev. A.E. Gruetzner, was preparing for a Lenten service that evening when the storm struck, but was able to leave the building and return home safely.

Lyle Lovett's great-grandfather, Herman Schroeder, served as a teacher at the parochial school attached to St. John's for thirty years.
