Low-Fidelity Brewing

Low-Fidelity Brewing Well, we're not a real business just yet... Call this a page to a dream. One day, maybe it'll be real.

For now, it's where all the brewing shenanigans will be posted.

Everyone get their taxes done on time? Fortunately we don't have to pay tax on our beer yet, but who can tell me what the federal excise tax on a barrel of beer is for small brewers?

Lots of excitement these days, especially now that the littlest assistant brewer is home. What does this mean? It means we're Kegging this weekend, that's what it means. And it means look for brew days in the coming week or two.

It's been really quiet around the brewery lately. Ever since the Braumeister's smallest assistant was born (6 weeks early) our minds have been a little preoccopied. But that doesn't mean the beer's gone unattended. Far from it. We're only about two weeks from being able to do some taste testing in the brewery and we're hoping to get one more beer brewed before then. We'll keep you all posted.

We begin the week at the brewery by dialing down the temps on our latest amber lager. Let the lagering commence!

Things are mellow here at the brewery. We're in waiting mode now, as we let the yeasties do their work. Diacetyl rest ends Sunday and lagering begins. We're very excited. APA next. Super cool.

Nice lacing down the glass too. Very pleased with this beer. Very pleased indeed.

I couldn't resist pulling a pint of the Vienna. As expected, it's still a little hazy, but it's as advertised. Balanced to malt forward with biscuit and toast. Just the barest hint of hallertau scent but very little hops character in the beer. That 1/4 inch of head held for a full minute.

Recently we were talking about what's in beer, and the two main families of beer, ale and lager. Around here and other places where beer nuts congregate one begins to see other terms like "porter", "stout", "pale ale" and the like. These are beer styles, and there's a bunch of them. My goal this year is to do one of as many of the styles as I can, so we'll take this little journey together and open up our palates a bit.

The latest lager has begun its diacetyl rest, and the Vienna is on gas napping away. Time to plan the next brew. Any suggestions out there? I'm open to ideas. Ales especially...

Anyone out there know a home brewer that went pro? Did they succeed? Do they still love to brew or did it become a job?
