Tis the season.

Each season has its own reminders of seasonality. Whether it’s that fresh jar of cherries or peaches you canned to preserve the sweetness of summer, or that jar of green beans you pulled from the cupboard during the dead of winter.

Today, it serves as a hobby more than a way of life for most folks, to honor the traditions of our ancestors.

The grocery stores have spoiled our way of understanding when things are in season and when they aren’t.

It’s been fun watching canning come back around to being “in.”

To me it signals an itch to get back to our roots.

To understand the difference between homegrown and store bought.

To experience the difference between fresh local foods and foods that have traveled across the globe to be on your plate.

Many garden enthusiasts will tell you there really is nothing better than biting into a freshly grown strawberry just as many farmers will tell you there is nothing better than eating the meat they put in the freezer for their families.
