Great Smoky Mountains National Park will begin demolition of the LeConte Lodge Recreation Building on July 14 to make way for a newly constructed building later this year.

To support this work, helicopter airlifts are scheduled for July 14 from 9 a.m. to noon, weather dependent.

During the three-hour flight window:

• Hikers will not be permitted on the LeConte Lodge grounds for their safety. Lodge restrooms, water spigots, the giftshop, and food/beverage services will be unavailable but will reopen once flights are complete.
• Trails and overlooks on Mount Le Conte will remain open. Flaggers will be stationed near the lodge and may briefly pause hikers during active airlifts.
• A composting privy is available at the Mount Le Conte Shelter, and drinking water can be found at the spring on Trillium Gap Trail (boil/treat recommended).
• Drivers on US‑441/Newfound Gap Road near the Oconaluftee Overlook should expect brief, temporary delays as the helicopter transports materials.

Built in the late 1960s–1970s, the current recreation building has welcomed lodge guests for more than 50 years. Due to extensive weather-related deterioration, it will be replaced with a new structure that honors the character and spirit of the original.
