Mount Holly FarmFest 12: ‘A best Saturday’
Annual event raises money for farmers market

The Mount Holly Farmers Market’s fourth annual fundraiser – FarmFest 12 – is coming up Oct 6 at Redlair Farm and Forest.

The 738-acre farm, preserved by the Catawba Lands Conservancy and owned by the Rankin family, borders the South Fork River and has one of the largest collections of big leaf magnolias in North Carolina.

FarmFest 12, which runs from 2 until 10 p.m., features local foods and chefs, area bands, games and nature hikes.

“It’s really about all these greats,” said market director Leigh Brinkley. “Great food, great friends, and some really great music. A best Saturday.”

Last year, about 250 attended the event, and Brinkley said organizers are hoping to top 350 this time. Among those expected to attend are a group of young urban planners from around the region. Brinkley said they want to experience “the convergence of conserved land, a working farm and local food.”

This year’s lineup of chefs and caterers include: Harvest Moon Grille Food Cart from one of Charlotte’s most popular restaurants; Bocca Felice and chef Gina Gutherie; Apple Orchard Farm, serving owner Art Duckworth’s traditional Southern BBQ; Market Fresh Catering featuring the seafood cuisine of Michael Casagrande; Simply Local, a retail grocer offering local foods and goods; and Lollies, locally grown and produced, all-natural ice pop.

The musical lineup features Gaston County native Caleb Davis, a singer, songwriter and guitarist; and national recording artist Mark Crozer & the Rels. More bands will be added. The performers begin in the late afternoon, providing a night of music under the stars.

Set in a pasture with the forest as a backdrop, children of all ages have plenty of room to play, while adults spread blankets or set up lawn chairs to enjoy the festivities, which include a beanbag toss tournament.

Tickets are $20 per person. Admission includes food, music and nature hikes. Iced tea, coffee and hot cider are available and BYOB is permitted.

Mark Crozer & The Rels

"Awesome! Timeless retro power pop" is how Mark Crozer & The Rels music was recently described on Taxi TV by industry vet Karl Louis. Comparisons have been made to The Lemonheads, The Byrds, Elliott Smith, Teenage Fanclub and The Beatles. Mark began as a solo artist in 1999 with the release of 'Shining Down On Me' in Canada and has subsequently released two further solo albums, an internationally acclaimed EP with his former band International Jetsetters and performed as rhythm guitarist with The Jesus and Mary Chain when they reformed after a 9 year hiatus in 2007. With The Jesus and Mary Chain, Mark performed at festivals such as Coachella, Summersonic in Japan, Rock en Seine in France, V-Fest in Australia, The Late Show with David Letterman, recorded “All Things Must Pass” for the NBC show ‘Heroes’ and headlined club dates in the USA, UK, Japan and Australia.

In February 2011, Virginia indie label Planting Seeds Records re-issued Mark’s first two solo albums from and an EP of new material. In the Summer 2011 issue of indie music magazine The Big Takeover (Issue 68), Jack Rabid described ‘To Get To You’ as a “classic, as is a cover of The Cure’s 1985 The Head on the Door’s “A Night Like This,” a treat for fans of Ride’s Carnival of Light. The a-side’s A-Ok, too!"

Mark contributed an original Christmas song to North Carolina label Ramseur Records' 2011 holiday release "My Favorite Gifts" appearing alongside The Avett Brothers and Jessica Lea Mayfield.

Mark's new band 'Mark Crozer and The Rels' has already become a fixture on the live music scene in Charlotte where it debuted back in April 2012. Their debut album 'Mark Crozer and The Rels' was released mid-April 2012. A follow up mini album 'Relics' and download single 'Broken Out In Love' are also available on i-Tunes, Amazon, EMusic, Bandcamp, etc etc.

'Mark Crozer and The Rels' 14-song debut album is also available as a limited edition compact disc which can be ordered by here.

Our Music Caleb Davis About Caleb Davis:

Sounds like: To the untrained listener, his music could be considered pop/rock, but a critical ear will pick up on his heavy jazz, R&B and gospel influences. “You’re going to hear me and an original song that consists of all of those things together,” he said.

Releases: His self-titled CD, his first release, has 13 tracks and will be available at a CD release party taking place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Southfork Room next door to Center Street Tavern, 115 Center St., Cramerton. A 9:30 p.m. show is also planned if the first show is full.

Influences: He grew up on Led Zeppelin and Jeff Beck; jazz legends George Benson, David Gilmore, Thelonious Monk and Wayne Shorter are also influences. Outside of music, Davis considers the Rev. Jeff Long of Parkwood Baptist in Gastonia, which he attends, to be a teacher. “He provides me with a clear representation of what it means to know Christ and that’s a huge inspiration to me when I write,” he said.

See him live: His regular haunts include Center Street Tavern, Jax Backstreet Tavern in Belmont and Freeman’s Pub in Gastonia locally, as well as Mortimer’s Pub at the Epicentre in Charlotte and Ed’s Tavern in Charlotte’s Dilworth neighborhood. For upcoming performance dates, follow him on Facebook.

Sample the music: His website, www.calebdavismusic.com, is expected to be up soon and will feature some of his music.

When Caleb Davis graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2006, he headed to Nashville to get his start in the music business, regularly working as a side man for Tennessee bands.

“I was what people refer to as a hired gun,” said Davis, who grew up in Gastonia and graduated from Ashbrook High School in 2003.

But he knew he’d never be satisfied backing up other musicians. So when he was ready to do his own thing, he and his wife, Jaclyn, decided to move to his hometown.

“Most people probably don’t understand that,” said Davis, 26. “This is a less saturated area. People are hungrier for music here than in Nashville, where everybody’s doing it.”

Since returning to Gastonia in the fall of 2009, Davis has worked hard to establish himself on the local music scene, playing between 250 to 300 dates last year and keeping the same pace this year.

“The more you play out the more people know who you are,” he said. “My wife stayed home and raised our baby — we’re about to have another one — so I’ve had to be the sole provider here. That means staying out more and I think that helps.”

Between family, his constant bookings and the private music lessons he teaches, Davis had to squeeze in time to complete his self-titled CD. It’s been a work in progress ever since he moved back home, he said.

While the recording process took time — one day a week for eight months to keep from interrupting his schedule — songwriting came easy, he said. He already had lots of ideas stored up in his head. His faith served as the main inspiration behind his songs, though you wouldn’t necessarily listen to them and call them Christian songs.

“There’s so much there that you can write about and you can do it from a world point-of-view,” he said. “You don’t have to spell everything out.”

Chefs Gina Guthrie Bocca Felice Bocca Felice (bO-ka fe-lEE-che) originated at the Piedmont Farmers Market in 2007 under the name Mama Mia's Kitchen; where the company's proprietor, Gina Guthrie, otherwise known as "Mama", along with her then 5-year-old daughter Mia, were always happy to share their Italian fare with the market's guests. This was our first opportunity to introduce the community to delicious foods that were made with locally-produced ingredients...creating a foundation to our support of local farmers/producers and their sustainability.

By the end of summer 2008, the Guthrie kitchen was inspected by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services*, allowing us to expand our culinary presence in the community. Our growth lead us to the launch our new brand-- "Bocca Felice", meaning "Happy Mouth" in Italian; allowing us to demonstrate what we wished for all of our customers to have after eating our savory fare....a Bocca -Felice! Many of you know Gina from our Chef in Residence Program at the Mount Holly Farmers Market This Summer. Such a delightful summer spent learning about how to prepare delicious and healthy food from our market. http://www.boccafelice.com
