Welcome to Special Sweets – Delicious cupcakes are made by a team of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities working alongside their instructors and other volunteers who have been collaborating since grammar school. When the students aged out of the public school system in June of 2021, and knowing the unemployment rate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities is over 80%, they decided to put their baking skills to work and create a business. Building on their students’ love for baking, cultivated during their Life Skills classes, they established the cupcakery in their teacher’s Westbury kitchen. In August of 2022, Nassau BOCES welcomed Special Sweets to the Farber Administrative Center in Garden City, giving them access to a fully functional commercial kitchen and cafeteria. In addition to the upgrade in facilities, the collaboration with Nassau BOCES partnered Special Sweets with special education and culinary arts students in baking training as part of the agency’s workforce development program. Special Sweets is also recognized as one of Nassau BOCES Worksite Partners. From hands-on vocational classes to celebrating amazing birthdays and enjoying the community, the days are a beautiful blend of love, smiles, learning, and, of course, delicious cupcakes! Special Sweets offers specialized employment training for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program focuses on fostering independence, confidence, and essential job skills that empower individuals to thrive in the workplace! With personalized support and hands-on experience, we're dedicated to creating inclusive opportunities for everyone. Our vision is to expand our bakery to provide targeted training and career opportunities, with the ambition of opening a cupcake café. This will enable us to serve customers in person while providing invaluable hospitality training, ultimately creating even more vocational training and employment opportunities for many individuals. We are truly grateful for the steadfast support our community has shown us throughout the years. Your orders and kind words inspire us every single day, fueling our motivation and passion. Thank you for being an integral of our journey. WE FLOUR TO EMPOWER!!!

Thank You, John! 🙌
We want to express our deepest gratitude to John from John’s Crazy Socks for his incredible leadership and tireless advocacy.

John and Mark recently met with members of Congress to champion crucial policy changes for the disability community:

Ending the sub-minimum wage to ensure fair pay.

Raising outdated SSI asset limits so individuals and families can save for their futures without penalties.

Tracking entrepreneurship data through the Small Business Administration to open doors for business owners with differing abilities.

John, thank you for using your powerful platform to speak up for those who need a voice. Your passion inspires us every day! 💙🌟

We are incredibly thankful for the opportunity to participate in the 3rd Annual Fork Cancer event.

A heartfelt thank you to Tommy and Christine DiMisa, as well as Noel Raab, for creating such a magical evening that brought everyone together for a cause that makes a significant difference in so many lives. It was a true pleasure to reconnect with so many wonderful friends and long-time supporters from our community and the non-profit sector.

We were genuinely honored to showcase our “Christina’s Pretty in Pink” strawberry infusion dessert as the sweet finale, alongside the exquisite creations of Long Island’s top chefs.

A special shoutout to all the chefs who helped us with plating and to Chef Eric LeVine and the fantastic team at 317 Main Street for their gracious hospitality.

As this was our inaugural experience at Fork Cancer, we are proud to have been part of such a meaningful gathering.
Congratulations to everyone involved—we can’t wait for next year!

Their mission to create career opportunities for the neurodivergent community, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), and veterans resonates deeply with us.

Together with Next Level Café’s dedication to creating social impact through nutritious, chef-curated meals, we share a unified goal: to combat unemployment in our communities and provide pathways to independence and purpose. 🤝🍰🍲

We look forward to a wonderful future ahead, working together to prove that great food truly meets social impact! 🚀🌟
