OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE WOODROSE CAFE LLC
Regarding the Proposed Southern Humboldt Business Improvement District
Woodrose Cafe LLC, operating Woodrose Cafe, is formally stating its opposition to the proposed Southern Humboldt Business Improvement District and its mandatory business assessment.
Unfortunately, we were unable to attend the most recent community meeting because of personal family circumstances. However, we have continued following the proposal closely, reviewing the available information, and staying informed about the discussions and decisions surrounding it.
Woodrose supports responsible efforts to strengthen Southern Humboldt, attract visitors, improve our communities, and help local businesses succeed. However, we do not believe that imposing an additional mandatory assessment on local commerce is the appropriate way to accomplish these goals.
Southern Humboldt businesses are already facing difficult economic conditions, reduced customer traffic, and rising expenses for food, labor, insurance, utilities, and regulatory compliance. An additional assessment would either have to be absorbed by businesses operating on narrow margins or passed along to customers who are also experiencing financial pressure.
We also believe that important questions concerning small-business representation, governance, financial accountability, administrative expenses, and measurable economic results must be fully answered before any mandatory assessment is established.
Woodrose Cafe LLC believes that economic development should prioritize voluntary participation, grants, existing tourism resources, community partnerships, events, and private investment—without imposing another mandatory charge on businesses or their customers.
Our opposition to this proposal is not opposition to economic development. Woodrose Cafe cares deeply about Southern Humboldt and wants our community to prosper. We simply believe that there are more responsible and equitable ways to pursue that goal.
We encourage all potentially affected businesses to review the official proposal carefully, ask questions, and make an informed decision.
