September 11, 2001. Two years into the Ohio Army Guard.

Brandi and I were in Gatlinburg, one last trip before our first child, due in November. We were packing to check out when I turned on the TV and watched the second plane hit. Then the towers came down.

We listened to the radio the whole drive back to Columbus. I went home and packed my gear. Grief and rage, in that order, and then just waiting for the phone to ring. I didn't know who did it yet. I was ready to go anyway.

Twenty-five years. That child is grown. I still know exactly where I was standing.

No specials today. If you're a first responder in uniform, coffee's on us. If you lost someone, come sit. You don't have to say anything.

Last Gahanna Market of the season is tonight.

Find us at Creekside Plaza, 4 to 7, pouring everything iced. Iced Chaider (chai plus apple cider), cold brew, and whole bean bags to take home. It's going to be 87. Plan accordingly.

The Well is open tonight too, 140 N High, a five-minute walk from the plaza. Air conditioning, a place to sit, and the people we work alongside.

And a date to hold: Muster starts Tuesday, September 15, 6:30 to 8 PM at The Well. A weekly gathering for veterans, families, and neighbors. Coffee and conversation. Come as you are.

In the military, muster is the formation where they account for everybody. You show up, and somebody marks you present. If you're not there, somebody notices.

That's the part nobody warns you about after you get out. It isn't the loss of the mission or the rank. It's that one day you realize nobody is counting anymore.

So we're starting a muster.

Every Tuesday night, 6:30 to 8:00, at The Well Gahanna. Veterans, families, and neighbors. Some weeks it's a conversation. Some weeks it's a guest with answers, a Service Officer on VA benefits, people who know the local resources. Every week the door is open.

Free. No registration. Come late if you need to. People do.

Muster is a community program. It is not therapy or counseling. It's neighbors talking.

Caramel and apple over espresso, finished with cold foam. Sweet up front, a little tart underneath, warm all the way down.

Tastes like the first cool morning of the season.

Here is who it supports.

In February 2018, Westerville lost Officers Anthony Morelli and Eric Joering in the line of duty. The community showed up for their families the way it should have.

Two retired officers, Mike Pavolino and Mick Yinger, saw what happens after that. Support pours in when a first responder dies. It is thinner for the one who finishes the shift, drives home, and does it again tomorrow.

So they built First Responders' Bridge. Retreats for first responders and their spouses at no cost to them, run by people who have lived it.

All September, 10% of Drop sales go to that work.

Grateful for evenings like this.

Three Creeks Church threw a block party right behind The Well tonight, and half the neighborhood showed up. Bounce houses, kids running around, neighbors catching up over coffee. This is exactly the kind of evening this community does well.

Being trusted to serve coffee at something like this, hosted by the same folks who gave us a home inside The Well, means more than a caption can really say.

Today is Military and Veterans Day at the Ohio State Fair.

Veterans and active military get in free with ID, today and any day through August 9th. If you’ve been putting off a visit, today’s the day.

It also happened to be our last morning here. We spent the week inside the Ohio Agriculture Center serving coffee for Grounds & Grapes, and this fair has genuinely outdone itself this year. If you haven’t made it out yet, go. It’s worth it.
