Ed White became the first American to conduct a spacewalk on June 3, 1965. During NASA's Gemini 4 mission, he floated outside his capsule for roughly 23 minutes, tethered to the spacecraft and using a hand-held oxygen jet-propulsion gun to maneuver through space. The Gemini program was a crucial stepping stone in NASA's preparations to send astronauts to the Moon through the Gemini and Apollo programs, proving that humans could work outside a spacecraft before the historic lunar missions that followed.
