Over 12,000 people call my town, Fostoria, Ohio home. Like many Midwest cities it has been hammered hard by manufacturing job losses, but our resilie working hard to reinvent their hometown.

Having earned the title Train City USA, it has over 100 trains rumbling through each day representing every railroad company. People come from all over to view our trains, often hoping to see the Iron Triangle area where rails from all directions intersect sending cargo throughout the nation. The city has purchased the old Pork Packing Plant on Columbus Ave., demolished and cleaned it up, and is in the process of turning it into a Rail Park complete with a safe viewing platform. Currently visitors can be seen nearly every day standing along the tracks near the old Amtrak station on South Main St., cameras in hand, waiting for a specific engine or train to make its appearance.

These visitors often stop in at Dell’s Family Restaurant, located two blocks north of the station. They meet friendly locals who often provide information besides being able to look at a large collection of old photographs of Fostoria during its early 1900’s glass factory heyday and its long rail history.

Every September we have a Rail Days festival featuring many different activities, food vendors and large model railroad displays, attracting young and old alike.

While dad and the kids are watching the trains, mom can walk a couple of blocks down Main Street and visit the Fostoria Glass Heritage Museum displaying some of the beautiful pieces once made here, including everything from fruit bowls to chandeliers. Fostoria was home to 13 glass factories between 1887 and 1920. Also in order, is a stop at the Fostoria Historical Museum in the old Fire Station on West North St. where they will learn among other things the history of the Allen Touring car that was once produced here. Despite the economic setbacks, I’m proud to say my hometown, Fostoria, is working hard at becoming the little town that could.

Living Hometown History
When we talk about our town's history and businesses that used to be, it's easy to glaze over what that "history" might have actually looked like. The First National Bank of Fostoria was located on the corner of Main and Center Street in the late 1880s we know, but what was it like to go there and do business? As far as what you would carry on your persons, what would your wallet or coin purse honestly look like?

Thanks to preserved items like this individual First National Bank leather money bag from the turn of the century and a later dated Bank Ledger book.. we can get a fantastic idea of what our everyday belongings from an era long gone actually looked like. These amazing pieces of Fostoria History in particular are part of a larger local, private collection belonging to the Geary family, who've been so kind to share some of that private collection with all of Hometown History today. The Geary Family name in Fostoria goes back well over a hundred years with decade upon decade of selfless members who each add to the legacy of communal support, growth, and preservation of our history. With that being said, I've been asked to make the announcement:

Hometown History is happy to introduce Hillary and her family, The Geary's, to our page; officially. They've been here for a while...we just didn't want to ruin this surprise 🤭

The Gearys have invited me in to help work through their entire Geary Family legacy with them while documenting it all as they go. Over the past month or so, Hillary, her family, and I have been on a mission to discover, uncover, process, protect, upload, and bring to light some never before seen items and photos of Fostoria, OH from over the past 120 years or more. (This will take time to do so please be kind and show patience).

Hillary is the accomplished daughter of Wendy and Henry Geary III who as many may know, contributed to our Center Street YMCA. Together with a small team in the '70s, Wendy and Henry also took photos for and wrote a book on our towns history called "Fostoria '76, A Bicentennial" (amongst many other achievements & accomplishments the family has had).

Please join me in welcoming Hillary and the Geary Family to Hometown History! Wonderful items like this and lots more verified, local photos by the Geary Family to come!
...perhaps a new local history book is in order 👀🤫

The famous image of Jesus on a silo in Fostoria, Ohio appeared in August 1986 on a 30-foot soybean oil storage tank owned by the Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM) plant along Ohio Route 12.

Key Details of the Event

• The Apparition: The nightly pattern—often dubbed "Soybean Jesus"—resembled a robed, bearded figure with outstretched arms and a young child. It was most clearly visible between 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m..
• Explanations: Company officials and plant spokesmen stated the image was simply a coincidence of rust stains, paint marks, and shadows cast by yellow sodium v***r security lights. Local religious leaders, such as Rev. James Bacik of the Toledo Catholic Diocese, downplayed it as a natural illusion.
• Crowds and Traffic: Tens of thousands of sightseers, believers, and skeptics jammed Ohio Route 12 and local streets for miles, causing major headaches and traffic jams for the Fostoria Police Department.
• Souvenirs and Commerce: The spectacle spawned a local boom in unauthorized merchandise, including T-shirts, coffee mugs, and souvenir photos, while boosting area restaurant sales.
• Vandalism Incident: In late September 1986, a Findlay firefighter named Ricky J. Sims was arrested and charged with criminal damaging after throwing paint-filled balloons at the tank to obscure the image.
• Public Perception: Opinions on the forum group Facebook remain split, as shared on Facebook Fostoria Group where some remember it as a vivid, unforgettable phenomenon while others recall seeing nothing more than random shapes like clouds.

The Fostoria Glass Company was a major American manufacturer of pressed, blown, and hand-molded glassware that operated from 1887 to 1986.

History & Operations

• Origin: Founded on December 15, 1887, in Fostoria, Ohio, using natural gas incentives.
• Relocation: Moved to Moundsville, West Virginia, in 1891 due to local natural gas shortages.
• Legacy: Purchased by Lancaster Colony Company in 1983 and officially closed in 1986, after long standing as one of America's largest producers of handmade glass.
• Museum: The Fostoria Glass Heritage Gallery in downtown Fostoria, Ohio, displays over 1,000 antique pieces from historical glass companies.

Popular Patterns & Identification

• Fostoria American (The Ice Cube Pattern): Produced from 1915 to 1986, featuring a stylized open-cube texture, three mold lines on the foot, and a ground/polished base rim. Often confused with Indiana Glass Whitehall (which has two mold lines and a smooth rounded bottom).
• Other Lines: Includes Heritage, Navarre (etched crystal), Coin Glass, Aspen, and Mayfair Topaz.
If you are looking to identify a specific piece or pattern, tell me:
• What color or etching does it have?
• What type of item is it (goblet, plate, bowl)?
• Does it have mold lines or a ground base rim?
