For decades, raising this flag on its own could get you watched, questioned, or worse. Then one morning in 1952, it rose over Puerto Rico as the island's official flag, and everything it had survived made that moment unforgettable. 🇵🇷🌅

The single starred flag we know today has a long and contested history. Its design dates to the 1890s and the independence movement, and for much of the early twentieth century, displaying it was treated by authorities as an act of defiance. A law in the late 1940s even made it effectively illegal to display the Puerto Rican flag on its own. To wave it was to take a risk, to declare an identity that the colonial order would have preferred to keep quiet.

That changed on July 25, 1952, when the Commonwealth was established and the lone star flag was finally adopted as the official flag of Puerto Rico. The same banner that had been a symbol of resistance became the symbol of the whole people, flown over public buildings, schools, and plazas across the island. The colors stayed the same, but the meaning had been hard won through years of struggle and pride. ✨
