85 YEARS AGO: THE FIRE AT WURZEL DAIRY FARM 🐄🔥

85 years ago today, the property we now call home at Milkhouse Cafe was the scene of one of the worst fires in the area’s history.

On August 14, 1941, fire broke out at the historic Wurzel Dairy Farm here in Fort Gratiot. The next morning, the Port Huron Times Herald carried the story across its front page:

“$25,000 BLAZE AT WURZEL DAIRY FARM”

The fire began suddenly in one of the farm’s large barns and quickly spread. According to the newspaper, three barns were destroyed along with a winter’s supply of hay, wheat and oats. Tragically, four head of the farm’s purebred cattle were also lost.

The Wurzel family and their neighbors rushed to save what they could. The newspaper reported that 100 people gathered to help, moving cattle, equipment and other property away from the flames. Fire departments from Fort Gratiot and Port Huron responded, eventually bringing the blaze under control.

The Times Herald estimated the loss at $25,000 in 1941. That would be over $567,000 today.

But the story of Wurzel Dairy Farm didn’t end with the fire.

The farm endured. One week later, Ada Wurzel was reopening the Colonial Dairy Bar they had just opened months before the fire in the front of the building. Generations later, a piece of its history is still alive right here. Today, the site of the old Colonial Dairy Bar is home to Milkhouse Cafe, and our little Wurzette logo is a tribute to the dairy farm that came before us. 🐄❤️

We love that when you stop in for a coffee, cone or ice cream cake, you’re visiting a property with a story stretching back generations.

85 years later, we’re proud to keep a little piece of the Wurzel Dairy story alive.
