This business has taken me on quite a journey the last year. I remember when I was graduating college being afraid that committing to a self made productive gap year, instead of an internship and a full time job, might be a mistake. I was afraid because it was the first time I had ever deviated from what I thought I should do and did what I wanted to do.
I can now say without any doubt that I made the right choice. Every season of this business challenged me in new ways and taught me new skills, and I would not be where I am today without this experience.
The summer of 2017 in Alaska was the season of learning how to completely setup and run a business in a foreign community all while living in a camper. I had to battle making new connections with strangers, 5am wake ups to prep, and the freezing wind and rain coming off the bay almost every day.
The winter of 2018 in Colorado was the season of completely starting over in my home community. I battled navigating the endless requirements by the city, below freezing temperatures, and biking on ice and snow in the dark early mornings.
The spring of 2018 was the season of being on top briefly and then crashing and burning...literally. I finally had established a routine route with consistent customers and the weather was improving! Then I ran into a curb and broke my wheel on the way home after a successful day at the St. Patrick's Day parade. This was the beginning of a long process of trying to get fixed and get back out on the road.
The summer of 2018 was the season that all my hard work had finally paid off and everything started to come together. I made good connections, had a routine, had great customers, and finally had exceptional weather!! Every morning I felt like I was living my best life as I rolled down the street listening to old R&B and dancing on my seat:)
As you can see this job wasn't always easy, but when you look at the pictures you know exactly why it was worth it.
Every person I met along the way inspired me to keep going! My friends, the tourists, outdoor enthusiasts, campers, city of Seward workers, Kaladi Brothers, and grumpy fisherman in Alaska. My friends and neighbors, the construction workers, the CSU staff and students, the VA staff, the city of Fort Collins employees, Jackie's Java, Marty my bike mechanic, Tanya the photographer, and the kids at Lee Martinez Park in Colorado.
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
You all made the journey worthwhile and I miss catching up over coffee. If you have been wondering where I am, I accepted a position with the nonprofit No Barriers as their engagement coordinator here in town, but will be back on the streets serving you a few days a week this summer.
Until then, I wish you all a Happy New Year and I hope that you will get after your own goals in 2019!!!
