During the war between the United States and Mexico, a few hundred immigrant soldiers looked at the army they were marching in and the country they were marching against, and they made an extraordinary choice. They changed sides, and most of them were Irish. 🌿

They became known as the Batallón de San Patricio, the Saint Patrick's Battalion, and their leader was John Riley from Clifden in County Galway. Many were famine emigrants who had fled starvation only to land in an American army where Catholics were despised, mocked for their faith and their tongue and given the worst of everything. Marching into Catholic Mexico, past burned churches and priests treated as enemies, a good number of them decided the people on the other side of the line were closer to their own than the men giving them orders. They crossed over and took up arms for Mexico, fighting under a green banner embroidered with a harp, a shamrock, and the words Erin go Bragh, Ireland forever.

They fought with terrible courage, above all at the Battle of Churubusco in 1847, where they served the Mexican guns to the last and refused to surrender even when the cause was lost. When they were finally overwhelmed, the United States Army hanged dozens of them in the largest mass ex*****on in American history, and branded the survivors, John Riley among them, with the letter D for deserter. It is a hard and complicated story, and there are no easy heroes in a war. But there is something unmistakably Irish in men who, having lost their country, still knew which side of a burning church they belonged on.

Mexico has never forgotten them. To this day the San Patricios are honoured there each year, their names read aloud, the Irish flag raised beside the Mexican one, and children in Mexico City still learn of the red-haired soldiers who died for a country not their own. Ireland scattered her people across the earth with nothing, and still they carried their faith and their loyalty like the last coins in an empty pocket. That is belonging with no homeland left to hold it, and it endured anyway. 🍀
