Today has been unbearably hard.
We stood inside BJ’s and watched 34 years of our family’s work, memories, and history be dismantled piece by piece.
To everyone else, it may look like counters being torn out. But to us, it is so much more. It is where Becky Jo built something from nothing. Where Nathan grew up and carried his family’s legacy forward. Where employees became family, customers became friends, and countless pieces of our lives have unfolded over the years.
And today, our little girl stood in the middle of what was left, playing quietly with her toy horse while the only coffee shop she has known disappeared around her.
That image broke me.
We know BJ’s Coffee is more than a building, and we know 34 years of love and community cannot truly be demolished. But today, watching the physical pieces of that history be torn away hurt more deeply than we can put into words.
Today, we are grieving. Tomorrow, we will keep going. One difficult step at a time.

An Update from BJ’s Coffee Company:
First, we want to thank every person who has donated, shared our story, ordered coffee, purchased a gift card, or reached out with words of encouragement. Your support has carried us through some incredibly difficult days and reminded us just how much BJ’s means to this community.

Our café remains closed, and we still do not have a confirmed reopening date. We wish we had more definite answers to share, but we are actively working on a plan to begin serving our community again as soon as possible. There are many pieces we are trying to put together, and we promise to share more once we have a safe and conclusive plan in place.

In the meantime, Nathan continues to roast and you can still order coffee beans and gift cards online. Coffee orders can be shipped immediately.
*If you live locally in Forest Grove, use code bjsrebuild at checkout to receive free shipping. Instead of shipping your coffee, we will personally deliver your bean order right to your doorstep. Just make sure your "shipping" address is where you'd like your order dropped off. This is our temporary solution while we work toward establishing a reliable local pickup location.*

Every coffee order, gift card purchase, donation, and share helps us continue generating income while our café is closed and brings us one step closer to reopening.

Thank you for continuing to stand beside our family, our employees, and BJ’s Coffee. We are working hard to find our way forward, and we are more grateful than we could ever adequately express.
With all our gratitude,
Nathan, Lindsay Jo and Aili Jo

So many of you have asked how you can help us and whether we have a GoFundMe or another way to help BJ’s. We have been so overwhelmed by your support in the most grateful way. Asking for help does not come easily to us, but the truth is that we cannot recover from this loss alone and we're pretty terrified right now.

We have created a GoFundMe to help support a path toward reopening.

If you are able to donate, share the fundraiser, or simply continue telling our story, we are more grateful than we can put into words.

Also, yes, you can absolutely still purchase coffee beans and gift cards from us!

Our coffee and gift cards are available to order online, and we can begin shipping orders immediately. Every coffee purchase right now is an incredibly meaningful way to support BJ’s and help us continue generating income while our café is closed.

We are also working as quickly as possible to find an immediate local pickup solution to avoid shipping costs. We will share those details as soon as we have a safe and reliable pickup location in place and we will make that an option online.

Thank you for standing beside our family, our team, and for helping us remain part of this beautiful community.

A very difficult update from Nathan and Lindsay Jo of BJ’s Coffee Company:

Our doors are closed until further notice… and we truly don’t know what comes next.

Yesterday, our café experienced devastating flooding at no fault of our own. At the direction of property management, we must remain closed while they oversee the remediation and determine how the damage to the building will be restored, with no assurance that our fixtures and property will be replaced.

Right now, we are waiting for an insurance adjuster to continue working on our claim. We have not received any insurance reimbursement as it’s too early in the process, and we are still waiting for a restoration plan from property management that will tell us how long it may take for us to open our doors and operate again.

It is beyond difficult to put into words what this uncertainty feels like.

BJ’s Coffee is so much more than just a cafe or a business to us. It is our family’s livelihood, the livelihood of our incredible employees, and a place we have poured our hearts into every single day for over three decades. Our team depends on our doors being open. Our small family depends on our doors being open. And we like to believe that our community also depends on our doors being open. To suddenly be unable to work, serve our customers, or even know when we can return is frightening and heartbreaking.

This situation is made even more painful as we are in the process of trying to build out a café at the building we recently purchased. We stretched ourselves for a step that was meant to represent growth, stability, and a hopeful next chapter for BJ’s. Instead, this unexpected closure interrupts and deeply challenges that forward momentum. Our existing cafe where you have always visited us, is going to be ripped apart and the majority of fixtures and our counters will be removed due to water damage. To make matters worse, we are then responsible for the rebuild per our lease, even though we are not at fault. Not to mention the total loss of sales and income that we were counting on to help make our new transition possible, that seems to now have to be refocused on just running any kind of business we can in the time being.

We are doing everything within our power to advocate for our business, our employees, and the future of BJ’s Coffee, but right now, many of the decisions and answers we desperately need are outside of our hands or remain unanswered by our property management at the shopping center.

If BJ’s has ever been part of your morning, your routine, your celebrations, your friendships, or your memories, we need your support now more than ever. Please share this post, continue supporting us in any way you are able, and keep our family and our team in your thoughts as we try to find our way forward.

We will share more as soon as we have real answers and direction. Thank you for caring about BJ’s, for caring about the people behind the counter, and for standing beside our family during one of the hardest moments we have faced.

We love this community, we love what we do, and we hope with everything in us that we will be able to welcome you through our doors again soon.

☀️ Start sipping our Summer Memories Collection beginning Wednesday 07/01 🍓🍌🍊

A collection inspired by the little moments that made summer unforgettable. Campfires under the stars, melting creamsicles, strawberry desserts, banana treats, and afternoons that seemed to last forever.

The Campfire Mocha combines rich espresso with house-made graham cracker syrup, finished with chocolate drizzle and a handcrafted roasted marshmallow.

Our Orange Creamsicle Cold Brew pairs smooth cold brew with orange-vanilla cold foam and fresh orange zest for a bright twist on a childhood favorite.

The Strawberry Cheesecake Matcha layers our signature matcha with strawberry purée, creamy cheesecake cold foam, and freeze-dried strawberries.

The Ban’offee Blended Breve blends banana pudding, cold brew, and vanilla wafer into a smooth, creamy treat, topped with whipped cream and a freeze-dried banana.

And the Fruit Tart Spritz brings together apple juice, guava, mango, and peach with sparkling water for a light, refreshing sip inspired by summer fruit tarts.

Sweet, nostalgic, and made to bring back your favorite summer memories.

We have some big news: BJ's Coffee Company is moving!

Some of you may have already heard through the grapevine, but we wanted to share the news ourselves and fill you in on what’s happening.

For the past 34 years, BJ’s Coffee Company has called the Ballad Shopping Center home. While this move was not part of our original plan, circumstances beyond our control led us to make a big decision, one that will help secure the future of our business for years to come.

Whether you’ve been visiting us for decades or just recently discovered us, we hope you’ll join us on this next chapter.

BJ’s Coffee Company opened its first brick-and-mortar location in Forest Grove in 1992. Becky Jo (BJ) and Ken Palmer founded the company after returning to Becky’s hometown from Kona, Hawaii, with their three-year-old son, Nathan. Growing up on a coffee farm and around the coffee industry his entire life, Nathan eventually became the roaster for BJ’s Coffee in 2010. Around 2019, Nathan and his wife, Lindsay, took over the family business as Becky stepped into retirement.

Today, BJ’s remains a true family business. Nathan and Lindsay are now raising their own daughter, Aili Jo, who was born in 2022. At three and a half years old, she loves spending time at the café and roastery and has become the newest generation of the BJ’s Coffee story. As we make this move, we aren't just investing in our business, we're investing in our family and a future that we hope will continue serving Forest Grove for generations to come.

Like many small businesses, we’ve faced our share of challenges over the past several years. Between COVID regulations, rising operating costs, record-high coffee prices, import tariffs, and ongoing economic pressures, the coffee industry has not made things easy.

In December 2024, the shopping center where we have operated for more than three decades was sold to new ownership. As our lease renewal discussions began, we learned that maintenance fees tripled, any future capital improvements to the center would be funded by tenants, and that our rent would increase dramatically… more than double what we had previously been paying.

We explored every option available to us, including extensive lease negotiations and legal review, but ultimately determined that committing to those terms would put the long-term health of our business at risk. After searching for alternative locations in town and finding none that fit our needs, we decided to invest in ourselves and our future. Our goal was simple: to create a permanent home for BJ’s Coffee Company, where our future was no longer dependent on rising lease costs or decisions beyond our control. We decided that owning our own building would allow us to invest in improvements that benefit our customers, our staff, and the future of our business for generations to come.

So, at the end of May, we purchased the Cole Carter Building at the corner of 19th Avenue and Elm Street.

Many of you may recognize the building from its previous owners, Mike and Carol Olsen, and Olsen Bicycles, which served the community there for many years. We are honored to work alongside the businesses already in the building, become part of its history, and bring new life to this wonderful space. We are incredibly excited about the possibilities this new location offers and can't wait to share them with you.

The new space will require a significant buildout before we can open. Because the building has never housed a food and beverage business, we will be starting from scratch with plumbing, permitting, and all the infrastructure required to operate a café. This is our first full café buildout, and while the process will take time, we are already hard at work planning and designing the space. Our goal is to move as quickly as possible, though construction and permitting timelines can be unpredictable. We will continue to share updates and a more specific opening timeline as the project progresses. In the meantime, we remain open in our current location and look forward to serving you throughout the transition.

While our address will be changing, our commitment to Forest Grove and the community that has supported us for more than three decades remains exactly the same. This community has been at the heart of our story since day one, and we are excited to continue serving you in a new home just a few blocks away.

If you'd like to support us during this transition, the best thing you can do is keep stopping in for coffee, purchasing beans to brew at home, and sharing our story with friends and family. Every visit and every bag of coffee helps us move one step closer to opening our doors at the new location.

We have also been incredibly touched by the number of customers who have already offered to lend a hand with the buildout. As we move through the renovation process, there will be opportunities for community members to help with various projects. If you would like to be involved, please email us with your contact information ([email protected]). Lindsay will keep a volunteer list and reach out as specific projects and scheduling needs arise.

Your support, whether it's through a cup of coffee, a kind word, or a few hours of helping hands, means more to us than we can express. We truly could not do this without our amazing community.

Thank you for supporting our family business over the past 34 years. Your encouragement, loyalty, and countless cups of coffee have helped make this next step possible. We can’t wait to welcome you into our new home and share the journey with you.

With gratitude,
Nathan & Lindsay Jo
