The funny thing is... we didn't think we had less.

We thought we had everything.

A cardboard box became a race car.

A rope became a tow cable.

A stick became a sword, a fishing pole, or whatever our imagination needed it to be that day.

Nobody complained that the box didn't have batteries.

Nobody wished it had a screen.

The goal wasn't to own the coolest toy.

The goal was to see how much fun you could squeeze out of whatever happened to be lying around.

Looking back, that's probably why those summers felt so endless.

When imagination did most of the work, you never ran out of things to do.

Maybe that's why so many of our best childhood memories cost almost nothing at all.
