The old black bear sat alone beneath the glow of the antler chandeliers at Big Bear Lodge, paws wrapped around a knife and fork like he’d practiced this moment a thousand times.
It was Fish Fry Friday.
The waitress didn’t ask if he wanted “the usual.” She already knew.
Crispy Canadian Pike. Extra fries. Tartar sauce on the side. A lemon wedge. And, because the sign by the bar promised $1 off camping cocktails, a frosty Papa Bear margarita sweating beside the plate.
The bear stared at the meal for a long while before taking the first bite.
Not because he was sad.
Because some dinners deserve respect.
The bear chewed slowly, savoring the crunch of batter and salt of the fries, eyes heavy with the kind of peace only found after a long road.
Tomorrow, he’d disappear back into the wilderness.
No reservation.
No forwarding address.
No tab left open.
But tonight?
Tonight he was just another tired regular at Big Bear Lodge, enjoying one final meal in Downriver while the waitress whispered to the cook:
“Make sure he gets extra fries. On the house.”

The black bear came back to Big Bear Lodge tonight… and this time he skipped the wine menu and went straight for the Honey Maple Salmon. 🍯🐻🍣

Witnesses say he took one bite, nodded respectfully at the chef, and refused to share his mashed potatoes.

Management is considering giving him his own booth.
