Hey!!!

You all. Seriously.

Amazing. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who responded to yesterday’s post about our open fall dates — and about what we hope our little venue and stage continue to be for artists and guests of The Merc alike.

Fall is filling up, and we still have a few more fun things to add to the list—including a first-time event we’re dreaming up.

THINK ABOUT THIS AS YOU READ ON.. Better to host something like this on a Saturday or a Sunday? Curious your response.

RACK & ROLL: The Second Spin Social

We’re hoping to fill the street with gals who have the cutest closets — and nowhere left to take them because the resale shops are full up anymore! (Sad, but true!)

Think trunk-or-treat, but with clothing racks. A little vintage market, a little boutique shopping and a little closet clean-out—with delicious beverages and an afternoon spent downtown.

Vendors will pull up, set up shop beside their vehicles and sell those great jeans, dresses, jackets, boots, bags and other pieces that deserve to be worn and loved by someone new.

More details and registration information are coming soon, but for now, start going through those closets! Time and date, LIKELY first or second weekend in October, coming soon!

From the beginning, we wanted our little stage at The Merc to be a place musicians loved to play — warm, easy, appreciated and ensure the seats were filled with people who are genuinely glad you came.

Carleen here. Hope and trust this finds you all so well.

Some unexpected downtime and miles on the road this summer — and especially this week, as we work through some family matters — have given me a lot of time to think. One thing I keep coming back to is just how richly blessed our lives have been because of music.

From my high school band teacher and UW Marching Band friends to every band I’ve played in — and every musician who has stepped onto our little stage — music has given me and our family some of the greatest people, memories and experiences of our lives.

As I slowly regain my footing after Casey’s passing and begin playing more with The Barn Flies again, I’m reminded all over again how music can move a soul, carry us through difficult things and bring people into our lives exactly when we need them.

All of this is on my mind today as I am grateful for the chance to work on our fall schedule and look ahead at another new year.

I know it can be hard to choose a small venue in a rural South Dakota town when you have big dreams and there’s a street dance, festival or bigger stage calling your name somewhere. It's also exciting to see more and more venues in the region hosting live music. But we hope our little corner of the music world holds its own kind of magic — and that musicians and music lovers continue to want to be part of it.

Our shows are generally 2 to 2½ hours rather than the traditional four. We provide and typically run the sound system, making it an easy plug-and-play setup. No need to haul a bunch of gear. Solo and duo acts fit our intimate space best, although we welcome larger groups whenever the stage, schedule and budget allow.

We'd love to do another songwriters round this fall and next spring, in fact, along with some other fun events.

We value the talent and time it takes to share your music. Our pay reflects the size of our room and the shorter show we’re asking you to play, and we’re always upfront about both.

Maybe you’re building a following, trying out new songs, filling an open night between larger shows or simply missing the feeling of playing for people who are happy you’re there. Whatever brings you our way, we’d love to hear from you.

Open dates through the end of the year, although we'd entertain others if you've got a night you'd want to play:

• Sept. 18 or 19
• Sept. 26
• Oct. 17
• Oct. 30 or 31
• Nov. 21
• Nov. 27 or 28
• Any Friday or Saturday in December

Longtime musical friends and new ones alike — thank you for giving us a shout.

What a freaking amazing gift this music community continues to be.

To those who simply love listening: Thank you, too. If it’s been a while since you’ve joined us, or gone out anywhere you might be to listen to a new or well-loved artist, know your presence truly does make all the difference.

The best of this beautiful day to you all!

We’re dishing up something delicious—and so good for you—this Wednesday: seasonal roasted vegetables and grilled chicken served over a bed of turmeric basmati rice.

Of course, we’ll also have everything else you’ve come to know and love from our crew.

For drinks today, we’re pouring Southern Sweet Tea as we join all of you in remembering a true legend—everyone’s girl, Dolly Parton. ❤️

At the bar, we’ll feature Dolly’s Dirt Road Martini, a distinctive blend of vodka, unsweetened tea and olive brine. (Dolly and her sister Rachel shared the original version in their cookbook, Good Lookin’ Cookin’.)

Here’s to a life that gave the world so much music, joy, kindness and color!

Friends! 🎶

We are so incredibly grateful for the amazing year of live music we’ve already enjoyed — and for all the talented, genuinely wonderful people who have graced our stages, both inside The Merc and across the street during our local summer concert series! Attaching a few photos below from just a few of our concerts!

It has been a pretty special year, and we’re excited to keep it going!

We’re working to fill out The Merc’s live music schedule through the holidays — and beyond— including booking next summer’s concert series in the park. Would love to hear from musicians interested in playing in beautiful downtown Flandreau, South Dakota.

Solo and duo acts are typically the best fit for The Merc’s intimate stage. We provide the sound system, making it an easy plug-and-play setup with a 2- to 2½-hour commitment.

We also consider larger acts for special and private events as well as the park stage across the street. The Driftless String Band, pictured during a recent performance, absolutely blew the crowd away. We're fortunate to have them at The Merc again Aug. 29!

If you’re one of our longtime musical friends, you know the drill—please reach out if you’re interested in an open date. If you’re new to The Merc and would like to learn more, we’d love to hear from you, too! Email [email protected] or text Carleen at (608) 692-0651 for more info or to claim a date!

And there’s more coming! We’re planning some fun fall and winter events, too. Stay tuned! 👀

Happy Tuesday, friends!

For you locals! School is back, alarms are set and apparently we’re all supposed to know what day it is again.

Whether you’re packing backpacks, teaching tiny humans or simply grateful your own school days are behind you, we’ve got lunch covered all week at The Merc.

Friday night, btw, we’ll keep the pizza ovens going after the Flyers’ game — we know school spirit can make people hungry! 💜💛

Have the best back to school week!
